The short version

What matters

  • •Collecting all Tesham Mutna equipment pieces from chests in the descent before finishing the storyline.
  • •Acquiring the Magic Ribbon beforehand if you want to keep Syanna alive and access the ceremony endings.
  • •Smashing the three blood sacs directly during Phase 3 to bring down Dettlaff.

Common mistakes

  • •Failing to evade sideways when Dettlaff fires his swarm of bats; sprint laterally and roll immediately upon release to avoid being killed in a single blow.
  • •Leaving the ruins during or after the quest without looting the red-glowing chest, the doorway chest, and the shelf box, locking out the relic set forever.

What you can skip

  • •Trying to defeat or focus your offensive swings on Dettlaff's blood-form clone in the third phase.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Approaching the Outer Ruins

Reach the ruins by heading southeast along the road cutting through the Caroberta Woods, or arrive through direct quest transit from Beauclair or the land beyond the portal. Regis meets up with you outside in the courtyard before you advance further inside.

Tip: Apply Vampire Oil and prepare Black Blood, Quen, and White Raffard’s Decoction ahead of entering.

  2. 2

    Descent to the Central Pit

Move to the central pit / ruined open-air arena where cutscenes play out and the confrontation with Dettlaff takes place.

Watch out: Grab these items now, as the crypt doors permanently lock after the main storyline finishes.

  3. 3

    Exploring the Suspended Cage Chamber

Proceed down the flight of steps into the lower interior hall surrounded by suspended hanging cages. Check directly to your right next to the doorway to discover another storage chest. Loot this container to acquire the face and foot gear left inside.

Watch out: These pieces become inaccessible once the main quest wraps up and locks the crypt.

  4. 4

    Checking the Cell Corridor

Move forward into the corridor flanked by iron holding cells. Search just past the second iron cell along the left-hand wall to locate a wooden box resting inside an indented wall shelf. Gather the remaining piece of gear from this shelf before heading toward the central grounds.

Watch out: Missing this wooden box before the questline concludes locks it permanently behind sealed doors.

  5. 5

    Entering the Blood Crypt

Descend into the blood crypt interior / lower level, where spiral staircases are flanked by hanging cages and cell blocks. When you reach the foot of the initial circular descending staircase where Regis stops to lean and rest, search beside the doorway wall. Open the red-glowing wooden chest placed here to claim a set of relics.

Tip: Sparing Dettlaff spares Regis from executing his friend, but Geralt is thrown into prison in Burlap is the New Stripe either way if Syanna dies.

Watch out: Failing to acquire the Magic Ribbon locks you out of the ceremony and potential good endings in Pomp and Strange Circumstance.

  6. 6

    Battling Dettlaff's Initial Assault

If combat begins, face Dettlaff across his first two phases in the open-air arena. Wait for him to miss a combo or blink behind you to land two or three light hits, keeping Quen refreshed. When he takes to the air in Phase 2, sprint sideways and chain rolls the moment his bat wave launches, then counter his diving drops with Aard or heavy swings.

Key fight: Dettlaff van der Eretein (The Beast of Beauclair)

Tip: Rolling laterally the instant the bat swarm releases prevents taking fatal full damage from the wave.

  7. 7

Slashing the Blood Sacs and the Finish

Shift into the third phase by contending with his blood clone while prioritizing the three blood sacs across the space. Batter down all three sacs while dodging or deflecting the clone's strikes to shatter the beast's defense. Once broken, a final cutscene triggers where Regis administers the fatal bite to his former companion, earning you 1,000 XP.

Key fight: Dettlaff van der Eretein (The Beast of Beauclair)

Tip: Focus your damage entirely on the three blood sacs rather than wasting strikes against the blood clone.

Key fights

Dettlaff van der Eretein (The Beast of Beauclair)

Enemies: Dettlaff van der Eretein in three distinct phases (Humanoid vampire form, Winged bat-like beast form, and Blood-organ construct with three Dettlaff's Blood Nodes)

Threats: Phase 1: High-speed dashes, arm-blade claw combos, teleportation slashes. Phase 2: Aerial swoops, lethal homing bat swarm divebomb (capable of one-shotting through Quen), ground blood-traps that stun. Phase 3: Manifested blood clone with leaping smash attacks, invincible until the surrounding throbbing heart sacks (blood nodes) are punctured

Weaknesses and resistances: Weaknesses: Vampire Oil, Black Blood, Quen, Aard (can knock him out of the air during swoops in Phase 2); strong resistance to standard bleed and fire damage

Tactics: Phase 1: Parry or dodge his melee lunges and counter-attack with fast silver sword swings; Phase 2: Sprint laterally and roll the instant his bat swarm screams/dives to avoid the fatal burst, use Aard or crossbow as he glides low to ground him for heavy punishment; Phase 3: Ignore the aggressive blood clone by continuously rolling around the fleshy arena perimeter, focusing all damage bursts into

Rewards: XP, Vampire Fangs, completion of main quest "Tesham Mutna" and transition to the expansion's epilogue

  • Equip Vampire Oil on your silver sword and drink Black Blood before stepping into the central chamber for the confrontation.
