The short version

What matters

  • •Inspect the loose stone behind Handsome Jacques immediately to grab the hidden notes and start "The Perks of Being a Jailbird."
  • •Stash the hammer and chisel from the gallows cart into the wall cavity to obtain the decorative Prison Poster for Corvo Bianco.
  • •Reclaim all your confiscated armor and weapons from the gatehouse chest before exiting the complex.

Common mistakes

  • •Heading down into the laundry room before checking the wall cavity permanently locks you out of the hidden compartment, the side quest, and the Prison Poster.
  • •Walking through the final gate without taking the Prison Poster from the loose brick leaves the decoration behind permanently.

What you can skip

  • •You can safely bypass the optional Gwent match for bread in the prison yard.

Walkthrough May be incomplete

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Awakening in the Courtyard

When you arrive in Toussaint Prison during "Burlap is the New Stripe" after Syanna dies, you wake up in the prison yard and speak with Handsome Jacques. Before continuing, activate your Witcher Senses on the stone wall directly behind where Handsome Jacques stands to locate a loose brick concealing a hidden hollow masonry compartment. Search this hollow to recover the Notes found in the Toussaint prison, which immediately begins the side quest "The Perks of Being a Jailbird."

Tip: You can play an optional game of Gwent for bread with a fellow prisoner after your initial conversation in the yard.

Watch out: Both the hidden wall compartment and the note inside are permanently missable if you trigger the laundry duty or leave the prison without looting them.

  2. 2

    Gathering the Tools

Walk over to the gallows positioned in the prison yard to find a cart filled with corpses parked directly beneath it. Search this body cart to retrieve the Hammer and Chisel needed for the prisoner's task. Return to the wall compartment by the initial starting spot, deposit the tools inside the hollow space, and ensure the stash is filled before proceeding to any prison labor.

Watch out: The Hammer and Chisel must be collected and placed into the loose brick cavity before entering the laundry room, or the side quest and its reward become permanently lost.

  3. 3

    Laundry Basement Brawl

Head downstairs into the prison laundry cellar to fulfill your chores by gathering dirty clothes and a bar of soap. Once you begin washing laundry, hostile prisoners attack you, forcing a bare-fist brawl where washboards and poles are used as makeshift weapons.

Watch out: Entering the laundry room locks out the loose brick cavity and its starting note if you neglected to search the wall beforehand.

  4. 4

    Execution and Liberation

Watch the events unfold as a full week passes, culminating in a cutscene at the courtyard execution grounds where an inmate is beheaded. Afterward, revisit the loose brick wall stash to collect your reward, the Prison Poster decoration, now left inside the hollow compartment. Then meet with Captain Damien de la Tour and Dandelion, who arrives to secure your pardon and arrange your departure.

Watch out: The Prison Poster is permanently missable and cannot be obtained if you leave through the prison gate without retrieving it from the hollow brick.

  5. 5

    Reclaiming Gear at the Gatehouse

Follow your escort through the guard tower gatehouse toward the exit. In the passageway between the inner and outer gates, open Geralt's Equipment Chest to repossess all of your confiscated weapons, armor, and gear. Step through the final gate to leave the prison grounds behind and conclude your incarceration.

Watch out: You must loot this chest to advance past the outer gates, but the physical container can never be reached again once you exit the prison.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Investigating the loose masonry brick

While in the prison yard before starting the laundry duty during "Burlap is the New Stripe"

  • Ignore the loose brick and proceed to the laundry room→ Miss the side quest and permanently lose the opportunity to obtain the Prison Poster trophy

Most players pick: Search the wall cavity and place the hammer and chisel inside
