Byways
Geralt arrives at the settlement of Byways to investigate slain Nilfgaardian soldiers and clear out necrophages overrunning the streets. After eliminating the immediate danger and questioning the surviving villagers, he tracks the scent of blood into subterranean elven ruins. There, he discovers that excavation work inadvertently awakened an ancient predator that must be eliminated to make the village safe.

The short version
What matters
- •Inspecting the Nilfgaardian soldier corpses to uncover the blood trail leading to the subterranean ruins.
- •Slaying Sarasti to secure the Bloed Aedd relic sword, Ekimmara Trophy, Ekimmara Mutagen, and the Fearless Vampire Slayer achievement.
- •Selecting "I'm nosy" when speaking to Bytomir to unlock an extra reward of up to 210 crowns.
Common mistakes
- •Agreeing to leave with "Fine, if you say so" after killing the surface necrophages; this immediately aborts the investigation and permanently locks the underground tomb.
- •Telling Bytomir "It's my job", which causes him to withhold the villagers' reward because the Nilfgaardian Empire is already paying you.
- •Attacking spiked Alghouls head-on during the initial surface fight without casting Axii to force them to retract their spines.
What you can skip
- •Visiting Milan Noran in Oreton first if you want maximum coin, as this allows haggling up to ~195 crowns instead of the default base pay from discovering Byways independently.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Village Approach & Square
When you arrive in Byways, clear out the pack of Level ~23 Ghouls and Alghouls prowling the main road and yards. Burst down the ghouls before they regenerate health, and cast Axii to force the Alghouls to retract their damage-reflecting defensive spikes.
Tip: Apply Necrophage Oil and keep Quen active so the swarming necrophages do not overwhelm you.
-
2
Barricaded Huts
Approach the barricaded huts to speak with Bytomir and the surviving villagers as they emerge from hiding. Refuse to simply walk away, and instead insist that you are nosy or that it is your job so you can investigate the slain Nilfgaardian soldiers.
Tip: Choose the "I'm nosy" dialogue option if you want Bytomir to promise an additional payment of up to 210 crowns.
Watch out: If you tell Bytomir "Fine, if you say so" and leave, the contract ends prematurely, permanently locking you out of the ruins, the Sarasti battle, the relic weapon, mutagen, trophy, and achievement.
-
3
Inspecting the Dead
Activate your Witcher Senses in the village square to examine the fallen Nilfgaardian soldiers and the dead carcasses scattered nearby. Follow the detected scent of blood leading away from the square toward the northern edge of the settlement.
Tip: Using Witcher Senses highlights the blood trail directly toward your next objective.
Watch out: Leaving the village without investigating the Nilfgaardian corpses permanently locks you out of the cellar key, the ruins, and all underground loot.
-
4
Plundered Hut
Follow the scent trail into the plundered hut situated on the northern edge of Byways, where debris covers a hidden trapdoor. Clear away the rubble to expose the locked wooden door, then speak with Bytomir to obtain the key to the cellar and tunnels.
Watch out: If you depart without uncovering the trapdoor and securing the key from Bytomir, you will lose access to the underground ruins entirely.
-
5
Elven Underground Ruins
Unlock the trapdoor, drop down into the cellar, and navigate through the fallen stone passages leading to the subterranean tomb. In the central chamber, confront and defeat Sarasti by using Yrden to slow it down, Moon Dust bombs to prevent its invisibility and regeneration, and Quen to absorb its claw swipes. Loot Sarasti's remains for Bloed Aedd, an Ekimmara Mutagen, and the Ekimmara Trophy before collecting the surrounding container loot.
Key fight: SarastiTip: Coat your silver blade with Vampire Oil and dodge toward Sarasti's flanks to punish its gap-closing claw attacks.
Watch out: Sarasti and all its unique drops—including the Fearless Vampire Slayer achievement—are permanently missed if you abandoned the contract on the surface.

What you decide here and what it leads to.
Investigating the village corpses
After defeating the surface necrophages and talking to Bytomir
- "Fine, if you say so" / Walk away without investigating→ Prematurely concludes the contract with only the base payout from Milan Noran, permanently locking out the cellar ruins, Sarasti battle, Bloed Aedd relic sword, Ekimmara Mutagen, and Ekimmara Trophy
- Choose to stay and inspect the dead Nilfgaardian soldiers→ Uncovers the scent trail leading to the locked cellar trapdoor, granting access to the elven ruins and Sarasti encounter
Most players pick: Choose to stay and inspect the dead soldiers
Point of no return: leaving without investigating the dead soldiers permanently locks the underground ruins
Motive given to Bytomir
When requesting the cellar key from Bytomir
- "I'm nosy"→ Bytomir promises an additional payout and awards up to 210 crowns after Sarasti is defeated
- "It's my job"→ Bytomir refuses to grant any extra money beyond the Nilfgaardian patrol's reward
Most players pick: "I'm nosy"

Key fights
Enemies: Sarasti (an ancient Ekimmara)
Threats: Teleportation-style dashes, temporary invisibility, rapid claw sweeps, high-damage leaps, and life-stealing regeneration on hit
Weaknesses and resistances: Weaknesses: Moon Dust bombs (prevents invisibility/regeneration), Devil's Puffball, Vampire Oil, Igni (fire damage), and Axii (stuns); resistant to physical stagger without signs/bombs
Tactics: Fight in the enclosed underground ruins chamber by detonating a Moon Dust bomb immediately to negate invisibility, using Igni or Axii to stagger it in the confined quarters, and sidestepping behind its claw swings for fast silver strikes coated in Vampire Oil rather than rolling into walls
Rewards: Ekimmara Trophy, Bloed Aedd (relic steel sword), Vampire Saliva, Ekimmara Hide, Ekimmara Mutagen, and quest XP/Crowns upon reporting to Bytomir and Commander Milan Noran
Enemies
Necrophages that roam the center of the village feed on the corpses left in the aftermath of earlier violence.
A lethal ekimmara lurking deep in the ruins that can regenerate vitality and inflict severe bleeding.
Tips
- Concoct and apply Vampire Oil to your silver sword and employ Igni or Devil's Puffball bombs during the cavern encounter to disrupt the monster's regeneration.
