The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition guide · Searching for Vildkaarls ✓ Checked against sources
← All areas in this guide

Spikeroog is the western isle held by Clan Brokvar, housing settlements such as Svorlag and Hov. Geralt journeys across this island to aid Cerys an Craite with Jarl Udalryk's torment, while the Hov arena hosts bouts to banish an unyielding wraith and conquer Skellige's fist-fighting circuit. Though the bear-shifting Vildkaarls dwell elsewhere on Ard Skellig, Spikeroog serves as a mandatory pre-condition to the coronation line where their conspiracy unfolds.

The short version

What matters

  • •Complete the secondary quest Possession with Cerys an Craite at Udalryk's home to resolve the jarl's affliction.
  • •Hunt Melusine in her southern sea cave shrine during Contract: Here Comes the Groom to obtain her trophy, mutagen, and rare crafting materials.
  • •Retrieve the Diagram: Ursine crossbow from the chest perched on the high ledge in the cave south of the Old Watchtower.

Common mistakes

  • •Postponing the quest Possession until late in the story; it permanently fails if not finished before setting sail for The Isle of Mists.

What you can skip

  • •Do not waste time hunting for an equippable Hym Trophy, as defeating or tricking the demon leaves no physical trophy behind.
  • •Do not search specifically on Spikeroog for the Salmian Brigandine, as it is a standard world drop and craftable armor obtainable across multiple regions.

Walkthrough May be incomplete

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Harbor Arrival and Village Services

When you arrive at the port of Svorlag by boat or fast travel signpost, you find the settlement functioning as the central hub of Spikeroog. In the northern quarter of the village, you can trade with an Amateur Blacksmith, while a Merchant tends shop down along the docks by the water. Step inside the local tavern to meet the Innkeeper, and examine the nearby notice board for work before proceeding into the heart of town.

Tip: Check the notice board and tavern early to pick up local leads and contracts.

  2. 2

    Brokvar Chieftain's Hall

Head up to the main hall in Svorlag to speak with Jarl Udalryk alongside his advisor, the druid Hjort. You will also meet Cerys an Craite here to take on the secondary quest Possession and assist the plagued ruler. Make sure to initiate these Brokvar clan affairs before embarking toward the rest of the island.

Watch out: Complete Possession before traveling to The Isle of Mists, or the quest will permanently fail.

  3. 3

    The Coastal Ring at Hov

Travel to the coastal settlement of Hov, where you will discover a fast travel signpost and an active fighting arena. Talk to the guards Lydrik and Gunnar, who oversee the grounds, before stepping down into the fighting pit. Confront Ulle the Unlucky, a cursed ghost bound to the arena pit.

  4. 4

    Old Watchtower Cave Ledge

Follow the path toward the Old Watchtower signpost and locate the cavern situated directly south of this landmark. Climb upward through the interior to reach a chest stationed on an elevated upper ledge. Open this chest to secure the Diagram: Ursine crossbow.

  5. 5

    Sea Cave Lair of Melusine

Head south of Svorlag to the southern coastal cliffs, where you will enter a mountain cavern complex sheltering a shrine. Inside this sea cave, confront the ancient ekhidna boss Melusine during the contract Here Comes the Groom. Slay the beast to collect the Ekhidna Trophy, alongside an Ekhidna Mutagen, Assassin's Trousers, and Lock of Lamia Hair from her body.

Key fight: Melusine (Eldest Siren / Ekhidna)
  6. 6

    Udalryk's Abandoned Manor

Climb the cliffs to reach Udalryk's Abandoned Family Home alongside Cerys an Craite during the quest Possession. Search inside the house to find the cellar key, unlock the basement trapdoor, and take the Brokvar Ancestral Sword resting on a table below. If you elect the witcher exorcism path, confront and slay the Hym inside the abandoned residence, noting that defeating the demon dispels it without granting any actual Hym Trophy.

    Key fight: The Hym

Watch out: The Hym drops no equippable trophy regardless of whether you fight it or trick it into the oven.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Method to banish the Hym

During "Possession" inside Udalryk's abandoned home

  • Tricking the demon via Cerys's plan with the oven→ Dispels the Hym without facing it in combat
  • Witcher's traditional exorcism method→ Forces Geralt to fight the Hym directly in combat

Most players pick: Tricking the demon via Cerys's plan with the oven

Must be completed before traveling to The Isle of Mists to avoid quest failure
