The short version
What matters
- •Recovering the sealed bottle to restore Johnny's voice and advance through the main quest *Ladies of the Wood*.
- •Grabbing the book *My Evening with a Vampire* from the entry chest in the Crones' primary hut.
- •Slaying the Fiend at the orphanage during "Return to Crookback Bog" to harvest rare mutagens and crafting reagents.
Common mistakes
- •Starting the main quest "The Isle of Mists" before resolving "Return to Crookback Bog," which makes the latter permanently unavailable.
- •Expecting traditional indoor dungeon layouts within Crookback Bog proper, since deeper subterranean complexes belong strictly to surrounding territories.
What you can skip
- •Searching the swamp village for smiths, traders, or merchants, as Crookback Bog contains zero commercial services.

1
Follow the Trail of Treats to the Orphanage
Following the Trail of Treats during the main quest *Ladies of the Wood*, you will arrive at Crookback Bog, where the central settlement is the Orphanage composed of wooden huts in the swamp. Use "The Orphans of Crookback Bog" fast-travel signpost to orient yourself, saving your progress via autosaves or manual saves since no sites of grace exist. Here you will meet an elderly caretaker named Gran (Anna Strenger) alongside the war orphans (Ainik, Bogumil, Mikula, Oeny, and Yolka) wandering near and inside the huts. Loot standard containers inside these buildings for coin and crafting diagrams, remembering that no vendors or services operate in this swamp.
Tip: Keep an eye out for submerged sunken chests and guarded sites across the wetlands for extra loot.
-
2
Play Hide-and-Seek to Learn Johnny's Location
To learn where Johnny is hiding, you must agree to play a game of hide-and-seek with the orphans scattered throughout the settlement. Once you track down the children, they will point you in the direction of the godling. Before heading into the deeper swamp, make sure your gear is fully prepared since you cannot buy supplies here.
-
3
Venture into the Marshes to Find Johnny
Head slightly northwest into the surrounding marshes until you find a clearing where Johnny the godling resides inside his burrow. Upon speaking to him, you will discover that the little creature has lost his voice and needs your assistance to retrieve it.
-
4
Retrieve the Sealed Bottle from the Harpy Nest
Head east from Johnny's burrow and climb up the nearby cliffs to find a raven's nest guarded by harpies and a wyvern. Dispatch the flying beasts, then search the nest to obtain the sealed bottle holding Johnny's lost voice. Guide Johnny through using the bottle to restore his speech so he agrees to aid your audience with the Ladies of the Wood.
Tip: Use ranged attacks or your signs to quickly ground the harpies on the cliffs.
-
5
Return to the Orphanage and Commune with the Crones
Return to the swamp settlement with Johnny to speak with Gran and examine the magical tapestry hanging inside the main hut. Through the woven tapestry, you will make contact with the three Crones—Brewess, Weavess, and Whispess.
-

Return to Crookback Bog with the Witch Hunters
Returning to Crookback Bog later during the secondary quest of the same name, you will rendezvous with Tamara Strenger and her witch hunter allies as they battle through the mire. Fight off packs of Drowners, Rotfiends, and Water Hags across the swamp trail and village grounds, collecting drops like Rotfiend blood, Greater Rotfiend blood, and Necrophage skin. At the huts, you will face a boss battle against a monstrous Fiend, which yields valuable materials including a Fiend mutagen, Fiend Dung, Fifth Essence, and lesser mutagens upon defeat.
Tip: Keep clear of defeated Rotfiends, as they burst violently when low on health.
Watch out: You must finish "Return to Crookback Bog" before embarking on "The Isle of Mists," or the secondary quest will permanently fail.
