Windows overlay

The full experience: an always-on-top overlay with on-screen markers, controller support, the playthrough notepad, Steam integration and narration.

Download from the Microsoft Store

Installs and updates through the Microsoft Store.

Or download the installer directly from GitHub. It isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may show a warning (why?).

Launch Web App

Works in any modern browser.

Steam Deck plugin

A Decky Loader plugin. Open the Quick Access menu, tap a preset like "I'm stuck", and get an answer that matches your game. Answers about your screen show the spots marked on your screenshot, and a guide can stay open while you play.

  1. Install Decky Loader
  2. In Decky's settings, turn on Developer Mode
  3. Open Developer, choose Install Plugin from URL and enter:

Not in the Decky store yet, so it installs manually. Source code on GitHub

Early feature, Windows app

On-screen markers

When an answer is about something on your screen, the Windows app can place small numbered labels over those spots in your game, matching a checklist in the answer. Markers are brand new and still improving, so here's what to expect today.

Works well

  • 2D and fixed-camera games, like classic RPGs and top-down adventures
  • Markers stay on their spots as you walk, and fade when you go through a door or the scene changes
  • Tick items off the checklist and their markers disappear

Still improving

  • In 3D games, markers are placed while you're standing still and fade away once you turn the camera
  • A marker can occasionally land a little off, or name something too generally
  • In the web app and on Steam Deck, spots are marked on your screenshot in the answer instead

Recent updates

  • 0.3.6: the guide is front and center: switch between Ask and Guide at the top of the app (Ctrl+G). The guide opens at the area you're in, shows your checklist progress, puts what you could miss first, and lets you ask about any item with one click
  • 0.3.5: a "Known here" panel shows what the Compendium already knows about your spot, for free; one tap confirms where you are; and guides for dozens of games on this website
  • 0.3.4: markers show a short note and an icon for what each thing is, and stay steady on screen; the app asks where you are in the game with one tap; enemy weaknesses are looked up for accuracy; and a new "Help me with this fight" button
  • 0.3.3: your daily question count shows the stone from our logo, in your theme color
  • 0.3.2: a new pixel-art logo
  • 0.3.1: markers in 3D games fade when you turn the camera, close when your game closes, have a cleaner look, and are lighter on performance

How It Works

From stuck to unstuck in three steps.

  1. 1

    Play your game

Quest Compendium sits on top of it, beside it on a second screen, or in your Deck's Quick Access menu.

  2. 2

    Ask, or tap a hint

Type a question, press a hotkey, or use a quick prompt like "I'm stuck". Your screen can be included so the AI sees what you see.

  3. 3

    See the answer on screen

Get a thorough answer in Standard, Min-Max or spoiler-friendly Roleplay mode, with a checklist of what to find and, on Windows, markers on the spots it's talking about.

Free guides: what not to miss

Area-by-area checklists of items, secrets, missables and enemy weaknesses, so you never walk past the good stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Quest Compendium free?

You can try it for free with 2 Pro and 5 Fast questions a day, no credit card needed. Premium is $4.99/month for 8 Pro and 25 Fast questions a day, with unused questions carrying over (up to 100 of each), plus premium features like on-screen markers and Gemini voices. During the beta, every player gets every feature. See Pricing.

What are on-screen markers?

When you ask about something on your screen, like where the items are or which enemy to target, the Windows app draws numbered labels right over those spots in your game. They're an early feature: they work best in 2D and fixed-camera games, where they stay on their spots as you walk and fade when the scene changes. In 3D games they're placed while you stand still and fade once you turn the camera. In the web app and on Steam Deck, the spots are marked on your screenshot in the answer instead.

Which games does it work with?

Any game you can put on screen. Quest Compendium recognizes what you're playing and can analyze screenshots of it. It knows popular games best, and like any AI it can occasionally be wrong, so double-check anything critical.

Will it get me banned by anti-cheat?

Quest Compendium runs as its own window on top of your game and uses standard screen capture. It doesn't modify game files or inject code into games. That said, some competitive online games restrict overlays or screen capture, and we can't speak for every anti-cheat system. If you're unsure, check your game's rules, or stick to single-player games.

What data does it send, and where?

When you ask a question, the app sends your question, the game name and, if you include one, a screenshot to the Quest Compendium server, which passes them to Google's Gemini AI to write the answer. If you sign in, your notes and progress sync to the cloud. Details are in the privacy policy.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC". Is it safe?

Quest Compendium is a new app from an independent developer, and the direct installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning for it. If you're comfortable, click More info, then Run anyway. The source code is public on GitHub. The Microsoft Store version doesn't show this warning.

Do I need a Steam account?

No. Linking Steam is optional. It lets Quest Compendium detect your active game, sync your library and track achievements automatically.

How do I install it on Steam Deck?

It's a Decky Loader plugin that installs from a link in Decky's Developer settings. Follow the steps in the Steam Deck section above.

Where can I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Use the Beta Feedback button in the app's settings, come say hi on our Discord, or email hello@questcompendium.com.
