The short version
What matters
- •The Wolven witcher gear maps (Hieronymus' notes on the witcher Elgar) available from the journeyman armorer in the western alcove.
- •Currency exchange and loan services provided by Vimme Vivaldi at Vivaldi Bank on the south side of the square.
Common mistakes
- •Failing to catch the doppler during the foot chase in "Contract: An Elusive Thief," which permanently fails the contract and locks you out of "The Doppler Effect" achievement.
- •Killing Keira Metz or sending her to Kaer Morhen earlier in the game, which permanently locks out the side quest "A Final Kindness."
- •Delaying "A Final Kindness" past the start of the main quest "Final Preparations," causing the side quest to expire.
What you can skip
- •Spending time searching the square itself for Triss Merigold, as she is actually located in the Putrid Grove.
- •Looking for any dungeon entrances or dedicated boss monsters, since none exist in Hierarch Square.
Walkthrough May be incomplete
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Arrive at Hierarch Square
When you enter the Free City of Novigrad during the main quest "Pyres of Novigrad," discover or fast-travel using the wooden Hierarch Square Signpost. Your first arrival immediately triggers a cutscene in which Caleb Menge and his Witch Hunters burn Felicia Cori and the doppler Chappelle at the stake.
Tip: You can use the local signpost for quick travel whenever you return to the marketplace.
-
2
Explore the Marketplace and Kingfisher Inn
Walk past the central merchant stalls and check the notice boards positioned along the square's perimeter. On the edge of the square, visit the Kingfisher Inn to buy drinks or food from the innkeeper Olivier, find Sylvester Amello near his stall, or search an outdoor table in the square to grab an invitation to the Memorial Derby. Head to the north side of the square if you wish to see Hodgson.
Tip: Inspect every outdoor table across the open area to pick up useful notes and notices.
Watch out: Contract: An Elusive Thief and its Doppler Effect trophy will be permanently missed if the doppler escapes during your pursuit.
-
3
Trade with the Armorer and Vivaldi Bank
Head beneath the buildings on the western side of the square to locate a journeyman armorer working in an alcove with his forge, where you can buy Hieronymus' notes on the witcher Elgar for Wolven gear. Next, proceed to the southern side of the square to find Vimme Vivaldi stationed outside Vivaldi Bank, where you can exchange foreign currency or take out a loan, and check the nearby outdoor stall to interact with the fish merchant.
Tip: The armorer provides both crafting and upgrade services right in his western alcove.
-
4
Clear Hostiles Off the Square
In the side streets just off the main area, take on hostile thugs or Witch Hunters during the quest "Novigrad, Closed City." Defeat these enemies to collect general loot including crafting materials, crowns, swords, and bludgeons. Hierarch Square itself holds no dedicated bosses or underground dungeons.
Tip: Standard human enemies here yield everyday weapons and common crafting supplies.
-
5
Search Triss's Rented Townhouse
Keep in mind that Triss is not here, as she is actually located at the Putrid Grove in the Glory Lane district.
Tip: Search the upper rooms thoroughly to avoid leaving valuable quest mementos behind.
Watch out: The side quest "A Final Kindness" requires meeting Triss near this square, but it will be locked out if Keira Metz was killed or sent to Kaer Morhen, and expires if not finished before the main quest "Final Preparations."
