The short version

What matters

  • •Questioning Josta, Astrid, and the gathered villagers in the center of town to track Ciri's trail.
  • •Grabbing the Diagram: Wolven steel sword - superior from the poison-filled room under the stone ruins southwest of the settlement.
  • •Agreeing to accompany Ciri during "Child of the Elder Blood" so you can properly bury Skjall in Lofoten Cemetery.

Common mistakes

  • •Turning down Ciri's request to visit Skjall by selecting "No time" in "Child of the Elder Blood", which permanently locks out the quest "Skjall's Grave".
  • •Rushing into the ruined chamber southwest of Lofoten without addressing the underground poisonous gas protecting the diagram chest.

What you can skip

  • •Searching Lofoten village for blacksmiths, armorers, or general merchants, as none exist here.
  • •Hunting for Morkvarg or attempting the necromancy interrogation in Lofoten, since both belong north in Freya's Garden.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Reach the Ruined Village of Lofoten

When you travel to the village of Lofoten on the island of Hindarsfjall, arrive either by taking a boat along the coastline or via teleportation alongside Yennefer during "Missing Persons". Upon reaching the settlement, you will discover that the area has been wrecked and partially frozen over by the Wild Hunt. Use the wooden signpost located directly at the village to register your fast travel waypoint, and save manually or rely on checkpoints since the game lacks Sites of Grace. Note that the settlement itself contains no underground dungeons or interior delve instances, nor will you find any shopkeepers, craftsmen, or upgrade vendors stationed here.

Watch out: Do not expect to repair equipment or sell excess loot here, as there are no merchants or craftspeople in the village.

  2. 2

Question the Gathering in the Village Center

Head to the center of the village beneath a tree, where you can speak with surviving women and mourning priestesses, including the high priestess Josta conducting funeral rites. Talk to the assembled locals—such as the elder Soren, alongside villagers Torgun and Trygvi—to ask about Ciri's whereabouts and hear about a disgraced youth known as Craven, whose true name is Skjall. His grieving sister, Astrid, can also be found among the community members here after her time at the bathhouse. Remember that the cursed werewolf Morkvarg and Skjall's dead body are not found here, as the necromancy interrogation and the beast reside to the north in Freya's Garden.

  3. 3

Relive the Bathhouse Visit during Ciri's Flashback

In the flashback sequence "The Calm Before the Storm", you take control of Ciri waking up after being tended to by Skjall's family. Walk over to the local bathhouse, which features both an indoor sauna and an outdoor natural stream pool. Enter the sauna with Skjall's sister Astrid to relax and recuperate before you prepare to depart.

  4. 4

Repel the Wild Hunt's Raid and Flee the Settlement

When the Wild Hunt and their frost hounds suddenly ambush Lofoten, navigate the burning village alongside Skjall and make your way toward the family home, stables, and horse paddocks. Mount your horses under heavy attack and break away from the settlement, riding toward Drowned Dead Rock along the coast to rendez-vous with the mysterious elf rather than heading into the village proper.

  5. 5

Loot the Ruins Southwest of Lofoten

After regaining control of Geralt, head southwest of the village to investigate a set of stone ruins. Descend into an underground chamber plagued with toxic gas to locate a storage chest. Open this container to secure the Diagram: Wolven steel sword - superior before moving on.

Tip: Be prepared to counter or quickly bypass the poisonous vapor filling the underground room beneath the ruins.

  6. 6

    Honor Skjall at Lofoten Cemetery

Much later in your journey, accompany Ciri back to the Lofoten Cemetery situated directly south of the village during the quest "Skjall's Grave". Pay your respects by helping her provide Skjall with a proper, dignified burial in the graveyard grounds.

Watch out: During the main quest "Child of the Elder Blood", answering "No time" when Ciri requests to visit Skjall's grave permanently locks you out of "Skjall's Grave" and this cemetery visit.

Tips

  • Use your Witcher Senses to follow the physical tracks and blood trails left in the snow to find out what happened to Skjall during the Wild Hunt's attack.
  • Equip Necrophage Oil before entering the village ruins, as rotfiends and devourers frequently scavenge among the corpses.
