Last Light Inn
Serving as the primary refuge within the Shadow-Cursed Lands, this tavern remains safe from darkness due to a protective moonshield maintained by the Selûnite cleric Isobel. Players coordinate with Harper leader Jaheira, trade with refugee artisans, and defend against an Absolute kidnapping attempt led by Fist Marcus. Allowing Isobel to fall or be abducted destroys the sanctuary's protective ward, transforming virtually every inhabitant into a hostile shadow creature.

The short version
What matters
- •Defeating Marcus while keeping Isobel above 0 HP preserves every vendor, refugee quest, and Jaheira's recruitment.
- •Upgrading Karlach's heart twice at Dammon's forge with Infernal Iron stabilizes her condition and unlocks romance progression.
- •Defending Halsin's beach rift for 4 turns recruits Halsin as a full companion and is mandatory to lift the Shadow-Curse.
Common mistakes
- •Talking to Isobel before buying essential vendor items or upgrading Karlach; if Isobel is knocked out in round one, vendors mutate immediately.
- •Leaving Isobel unprotected during Marcus's raid; high initiative and defensive buffs like Sanctuary or Otiluke's Resilient Sphere prevent her from getting blitzed down before your turn.
What you can skip
- •Forcing combat with the Strange Ox, as sparing it secures unique transformations and combat assistance in Act 3.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Breach the Ward and Cross the Threshold
When you approach the entrance bridge across the river, Jaheira roots your party with vines until you talk your way through or have Mol or Marcus vouch for you. Once permitted past the barrier, you unlock the Last Light Inn waypoint directly in the main courtyard. Take a short detour across the northern bridge east of the open graves to spot a rubble pile hiding a buried soldier before exploring the inn grounds.
Tip: Let Mol speak for you during the bridge confrontation to skip ability checks entirely.
Watch out: If you fail checks and attack Jaheira here, the entire sanctuary turns permanently hostile.
-
2
Secure the Courtyard and Stables
Walk through the courtyard to trade with Quartermaster Talli near the main entrance, then visit Dammon at the ox barn forge to advance Karlach's engine repairs with Infernal Iron. Climb the ladder into the barn loft above Dammon to loot the locked chest, then inspect the Strange Ox in the stalls below. Speak with the ox using animal communication, but disengage peacefully if you want its aid later in the city.
Tip: Dammon can forge Flawed Helldusk armor pieces here if you bring him extra Infernal Iron.
Watch out: Pushing the Strange Ox with repeated probing checks provokes an immediate battle against an ooze monstrosity.
-
3
Rally Allies in the Taproom
Enter the ground floor of the inn to meet Barcus Wroot, Alfira, and Counsellor Florrick to update their rescue quests. Speak with Rolan at the bar before he storms off into the dark, and observe Mol bargaining with Raphael over a chessboard in the corner. In the side room, inspect the catatonic soldier Art Cullagh and relay his song about Thaniel to Halsin at your camp so the druid relocates to the inn.
Tip: Cast Speak with Dead on corpses or use an instrument near Alfira to gain inspiration points.
Watch out: Rolan leaves for the shadows soon after this conversation; lingering too long before following his quest outside will lead to his death.
-
4
Confront Marcus and Defend Isobel
Head upstairs to the second-floor balcony quarters to speak with the cleric Isobel for her Selûnite ward blessing. Fist Marcus immediately ambushes the room with Winged Horrors, attempting to paralyze and kidnap Isobel while lower beasts harass the Harpers downstairs. Concentrate burst damage and crowd control directly on Marcus to kill him before he depletes Isobel's hit points, then loot his ring.
Key fight: Fist Marcus and the Abduction of IsobelTip: Cast Sanctuary, Mage Armor, or Otiluke's Resilient Sphere on Isobel immediately in round one to prevent Marcus from bursting her down.
Watch out: If Marcus reduces Isobel to 0 HP, she is abducted, collapsing the protective shield and transforming nearly every NPC at the inn into hostile shadow undead.
-
5
Explore the Cellar Shrine
Descend through the floor hatch inside the inn or the northern exterior river hatch to reach the cellar network. Smash through the cracked masonry wall into the hidden cavern, avoiding tripwires and breaking through the webbed double doors to uncover a trapped heavy chest. Clear out the pack of Meenlocks lurking around the submerged Selûnite shrine before claiming the cowl from their remains.
Tip: Meenlocks suffer disadvantage on attack rolls while bathed in bright light, so bring torches, the Daylight spell, or the Blood of Lathander.
Watch out: The Coruscation Ring chest is rigged with a heavy blast trap that destroys nearby containers if triggered without disarming.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Confronting the Strange Ox
In the courtyard stables when speaking with the Strange Ox
- Back down and leave it alone→ The ox survives to Act 3, offering a quest in Rivington and becoming a summonable ally in "Gather Your Allies"
- Push the conversation to expose it and fight→ Defeat its slime form to loot the Hat of Fire Acuity (and Shapeshifter's Boon Ring if not obtained in Act 1), but lock out its Act 3 questline and alliance
Most players pick: Back down and leave it alone
Be careful not to use area-of-effect spells during combat near Dammon, or he may turn hostile or die.
Flaming Fist Marcus & Isobel's Abduction
On the second-floor balcony after speaking to Isobel
- Defend Isobel and kill Marcus→ Isobel's protective ward holds, all refugees and Harpers survive, merchants remain available, and you loot the Shifting Corpus Ring from Marcus
- Side with Marcus or allow Isobel to be captured/killed→ The ward collapses instantly; every NPC in the inn except Jaheira transforms into shadow-cursed undead and must be killed; lose vendors (Dammon, Quartermaster Talli), lock out Karlach's engine upgrades, lose Alfira's Potent Robe reward, and Isobel fights against you at Moonrise Towers
Most players pick: Defend Isobel and kill Marcus
Point of no return for Last Light Inn's survival; Marcus has high initiative and prioritizes knocking out Isobel quickly.
Intervening in Raphael's Chess Match with Mol
At the ground-floor chess table
- Advise Mol or expose Raphael's contract via dialogue checks→ Warns Mol about devil bargains and delays Raphael's influence, but she secretly signs later anyway
- Stay silent or encourage the deal→ Mol proceeds with Raphael's bargain without hesitation
Most players pick: Advise Mol or expose Raphael's contract
Requires DC 13–18 Arcana/Insight/Deception checks; Astarion approves of encouraging Mol to take Raphael's deal.
Defending the Shadowfell Portal
Shoreline north of the inn after waking Art Cullagh
- Successfully defend the portal for 4 turns→ Halsin rescues Thaniel, allowing you to recruit Halsin as a full companion and advance *Lift the Shadow Curse*
- Allow the portal to be destroyed→ Halsin is lost forever in the Shadowfell and the Shadow-Curse can never be cured
Most players pick: Successfully defend the portal for 4 turns
Halsin will leave the party permanently if this quest fails or is skipped before entering the Shadowfell in the Gauntlet of Shar.
