Rosymorn Monastery
The Rosymorn Monastery is an ancient ruin dedicated to Lathander that sits directly atop Crèche Y'llek in the Mountain Pass region. Players explore its multiple crumbling floors, fight various beasts that have infested the holy grounds, and solve weapon puzzles left behind by the Dawnmasters. Investigating the site allows adventurers to discover the subterranean Githyanki stronghold and acquire the legendary mace hidden deep within the sanctuary.

The short version
What matters
- •Obtaining The Blood of Lathander, one of the strongest legendary weapons in the early and mid-game, which trivializes undead and fiends with passive blind and radiant revival.
- •Passing the Zaith'isk skill checks with your main character to secure the permanent Awakened passive, turning all Illithid Powers into versatile bonus actions.
- •Acquiring the Dawnmaster's Crest from the stained-glass puzzle so you can claim the monastery relic cleanly without triggering the Solar Lance sequence.
- •Gathering three loose Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens from the infirmary tables to unlock crucial Illithid brain upgrades.
Common mistakes
- •Antagonizing Queen Vlaakith's ethereal projection inside the Inquisitor's Chamber, which results in an immediate Wish-induced Total Party Kill.
- •Putting Lae'zel into the Zaith'isk instead of using it yourself, which denies your main character the Awakened buff and risks permanent stat penalties for her.
- •Grabbing the Blood of Lathander without inserting the Dawnmaster's Crest, trapping your party in a four-turn countdown that levels the monastery and kills any companions inside.
What you can skip
- •Slaying the Ancient Giant Eagle on the roof, as you can bypass combat entirely by using an invisible or stealthy character to snatch the warhammer from the nest.
- •Buying unique magic items and gear from Quartermistress A'jak'nir Jeera before turning the crèche hostile, as vendors do not drop their full shop inventory upon death.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Infiltrate the Wine Cellar
When you approach the sealed front entrance of Rosymorn Monastery, circle around to broken stained-glass windows or drop through the collapsed masonry into the ground-floor wine room. Clear out the pack of drunken Kobold Looters roaming among the broken casks, looting the Ceremonial Mace from one of the kobolds. Before moving upstairs, search the surrounding alcoves for supplies and take the nearby stairs toward the interior courtyard.
Tip: Detonate the wine-soaked fire surfaces from range to eliminate multiple kobolds before they swarm you.
-
2
Scour the Upper Chambers
Head upstairs and bypass the enchanted door or smash through the cracked outer wall into the glowing shrine room to destroy the Guardian of Faith and seize its armaments. Continue into the nearby infested library where strange weeping echoes from behind a barricaded door, taking down the ambushing pack of nine Gremishkas to uncover the monastery parables. Before ascending to the heights, inspect the central chamber featuring the massive stained-glass floor and note the four pedestals surrounding it.
Tip: Avoid casting spells near the Gremishkas, as magical energy triggers volatile wild magic surges.
-
3
Raid the Rooftop Nest
Climb the knotted vines and external scaffolding to reach the monastery's uppermost open-air rooftop, where an Ancient Giant Eagle and its hatchling watch over their roost. Either pacify the raptors using Speak with Animals and skill checks or slay them outright to claim the relic resting directly inside their nest. Before heading back down, step onto the exterior overlook just below the eagle's perch and leap across the gap to loot the gilded storage chest sitting on the open balcony.
Tip: Position your ranged characters on the wooden scaffold high ground before initiating dialogue with the eagles.
Watch out: Jumping onto the exterior balcony without Feather Fall or high Strength can cause characters to plunge down the monastery cliffside to their death.
-
4
Solve the Stained-Glass Window Puzzle
Return to the upper stained-glass chamber and place the recovered armaments onto their matching daises: place the Ceremonial Warhammer for Dawnmaster Seed, the Ceremonial Mace for Dawnmaster Stockhold, and the Ceremonial Battleaxe for Dawnmaster Vaseid. Once all four altars are properly matched with the pre-placed Ceremonial Longsword, the concealed wall safe pops open to reveal the Dawnmaster's Crest alongside a temporary radiant blessing for your party. Before venturing down into the basement, ensure you keep this crest stored safely in your active inventory.
Tip: If you accidentally sold or misplaced any ceremonial gear, standard mundane weapons of the exact same weapon types work on the altars as substitutes.
Watch out: Forgetting to grab the Dawnmaster's Crest locks you out of safely retrieving the monastery's legendary relic later without triggering a catastrophic self-destruct sequence.
-
5
Delve into Crèche Y'llek's Infirmary and Hatchery
Descend the basement stairs beside the central statue of Lathander to enter Crèche Y'llek, proceeding through the checkpoint guards to explore the medical and breeding wings. Visit the infirmary to confront Ghustil Stornugoss and interact with the Zaith'isk extraction device, enduring the machine's agonizing extractions yourself to harvest its latent psionic power. Continue into the adjacent Hatchery to speak with Varsh Ko'kuu, using diplomacy or deception to persuade him to hand over the unhatched githyanki egg resting in the acid pool.
Tip: Suffer through all three escalating saving throws yourself in the Zaith'isk chair to permanently unlock the Awakened trait, allowing you to use all Illithid Powers as bonus actions.
Watch out: Letting Lae'zel use the Zaith'isk risks saddling her with permanent, crippling debuffs to her mental attributes if you fail to pass the extreme Arcana and Wisdom checks required to intervene.
-
6
Breach the Captain's Office
Advance through the central hallway toward the command quarters to confront Kith'rak Therezzyn and demand passage to see the Inquisitor. Hand over your Astral Prism artifact to satisfy her inspection, pickpocket the Gith Shard from her belt, or cut down the captain alongside her wolves and guards to seize the keygem off her corpse. Before opening the barrier to the inner sanctum, place the shard into the console beside the ornate energy door to disperse the force field.
Key fight: Kith'rak TherezzynTip: Cast Silence or crowd-control spells on Therezzyn immediately to stop her from summoning reinforcements across the adjoining corridor.
-
7
Enter the Astral Prism and Defeat the Inquisitor
Step into the central Inquisitor's Chamber to meet Ch'r'ai W'wargaz, who demands you submit to Queen Vlaakith and surrender the Astral Prism. Cut down Ch'r'ai W'wargaz and his deadly honor guard in the chamber, then interact with the planar projection of Vlaakith and step through the tear to converse with your Dream Visitor within the prism. Before stepping back out to the material plane, refuse to execute your Dream Visitor to survive and preserve Lae'zel's alliance.
Key fight: Ch'r'ai W'wargazTip: Focus your heavy bursts on W'wargaz before he can summon Mind Palms or buff his flanking Ardent guards.
Watch out: Mocking Vlaakith or outright questioning her godhood during the dialogue will cause her to cast Wish, instantly triggering an unavoidable Game Over.
-
8
Plunder the Secret Chamber
Walk into the hallway west of the Inquisitor's room and rotate the two Lathander statues—turning the northern statue east toward sunrise and the southern statue west toward sunset—to reveal a concealed stairway. Traverse the trapped corridor by blasting the glowing energy sources powering each barrier and disarming or vaulting past the lethal Dawnbreaker pulse emitters. Insert the Dawnmaster's Crest into the central pedestal at the heart of the inner sanctuary to safely lower the glass shield and claim the legendary weapon.
Tip: If the southern statue refuses to turn, coat it in grease or strike it with a bludgeoning strike to unstick the rusted axle.
Watch out: Pulling The Blood of Lathander without inserting the Dawnmaster's Crest starts a 4-turn Solar Lance self-destruct timer that vaporizes the entire monastery if you fail to escape or shatter its power crystals.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
The Zaith'isk Chair
In Crèche Y'llek's infirmary with Ghustil Stornugoss
- Sit in the chair yourself→ Pass three DC saves to permanently gain the Awakened passive (illithid powers become bonus actions), or take permanent stat debuffs on failure
- Let Lae'zel sit in the chair→ Avoid player debuffs, but Lae'zel risks taking permanent stat debuffs on failed high DC saves, and you gain no Awakened buff
Most players pick: Sit in the chair yourself
Failing saves inflicts permanent ability score penalties (-2 INT/WIS/CON), though they can be cured later by consuming tadpoles.
The Githyanki Egg
In the hatchery speaking with Varsh Ko'kuu
- Persuade or deceive Ko'kuu to give you the egg→ Receive the Githyanki Egg and Varsh Ko'kuu's Boots peacefully to complete or advance "Steal a Githyanki Egg"
- Kill Ko'kuu and the caretakers→ Loot the egg by force, turning the hatchery hostile
- Leave the egg in the nursery→ The egg remains behind and you forfeit delivering it to Lady Esther
Most players pick: Persuade or deceive Ko'kuu to give you the egg
Delivering the real egg to Lady Esther causes a massacre at the Society of Brilliance lodge in Act 3.
Youth Varrl's Fate
In the training classroom with Sa'varsh Kethk
- Intervene via Persuasion or non-lethal duel→ Spares Varrl's life and allows you to obtain the disc "Orpheus, Prince of the Comet, Part Two: Sacrifice" peacefully
- Let the instructor execute Varrl or kill him yourself→ Varrl dies; the Orpheus lore disc must be looted from his corpse
Most players pick: Intervene via Persuasion or non-lethal duel
Finding all Orpheus slate discs is required to fully complete the quest "Discover the History of Prince Orpheus".
Audience with Vlaakith
In the Inquisitor's chamber after defeating or speaking with Ch'r'ai W'wargaz
- Comply and enter the Astral Prism→ Advances the main story and preserves Lae'zel's loyalty
- Openly mock or defy Vlaakith's godhood→ Vlaakith casts Wish and triggers an instant, unavoidable Game Over (Party Wipe)
- Refuse to enter the prism and try to walk away→ Lae'zel turns hostile permanently and must be killed
Most players pick: Comply and enter the Astral Prism
Mocking Vlaakith triggers an instant Total Party Kill.
Fate of the Dream Visitor
Inside the Astral Prism at the behest of Vlaakith
- Spare the Dream Visitor→ Strengthens trust with your protector; exposes Vlaakith's deceit, beginning Lae'zel's path to defecting from Vlaakith
- Attempt to execute the Dream Visitor→ The Visitor immediately heals, scolds you for your betrayal, but survives; the outcome is fundamentally identical
Most players pick: Spare the Dream Visitor
Crucial turning point for Lae'zel's companion quest and personal worldview.
Taking the Blood of Lathander
In the secret armory beneath the crèche
- Insert the Dawnmaster's Crest→ Safely retrieve the legendary mace "The Blood of Lathander" with no side effects
- Take the mace without the Crest→ Activates the Lance of Lathander defense system, starting a 4-turn countdown to destroy the solar power crystals or flee before the entire monastery collapses and wipes out all remaining inhabitants
Most players pick: Insert the Dawnmaster's Crest
Collapsing the monastery permanently kills all remaining NPCs inside, including companion party members left behind.

- A'jak'nir Jeera: Sells the Gloves of Dexterity, Knife of the Undermountain King, Defender Flail, and various arrows and potions
- Lady Esther: Sells The Graceful Cloth along with various adventuring supplies along the trail leading to the monastery
Tips
- If the turning mechanism on the western Lathander statue gets jammed, throw a bottle of Grease at its base or strike it with a blunt weapon to break it free.
- Inserting the Dawnmaster's Crest before retrieving the Blood of Lathander disarms the monastery's solar destruction lance, preventing a timed four-turn escape sequence.
