The short version

What matters

  • •Defeating the ambush rewards you with a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen from Manip Edenosa's remains and gives Outlanders the Urban Jungle inspiration.
  • •Digging up the hidden dirt mounds at X: -164 Y: 7 and X: -130 Y: -20 yields gold and very rare spell scrolls.

Common mistakes

  • •Walking blindly into the fountain area triggers an ambush where assassins instantly slaughter nearby civilians; pass the DC 10 Perception check and flank via the stairs or flowerbeds to surprise them instead.
  • •Agreeing to the cultists' slaughter allows them to withdraw safely without killing Edenosa, which permanently costs you the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen.
  • •Carelessly looting Edenosa's red-outlined body in plain sight will provoke the surviving Flaming Fist guards; deploy stealth, fog, or a distraction before taking the specimen.

What you can skip

  • •You can bypass Albert chasing Sparky and the book club banter without missing any tactical advantages or gear.
  • •Listening to the retired Flaming Fists or the children arguing over a lost ball offers no tangible rewards.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Enter the Grounds and Spot the Stray Pet

When you walk into the northern park through the primary gate at X: -130 Y: 52, broken fencing near Facemaker's Boutique, or side passages by Lavernica's Home and The Blushing Mermaid, head onto the paved entrance ground. You will spot an owner named Albert dashing around as he tries to rein in his swift dog, Sparky. Take a moment to dig up a buried chest containing gold, a gem, and a very rare scroll at X: -164 Y: 7 after beating a DC 10 Survival check.

Tip: Use the coordinates to line up your shovel digging spot early so you do not overlook the northern dirt mounds.

  2. 2

    Stroll Past the Gathering Spots

Move along the paths to hear the side-entrance book club debate held by Caerdwyn, Kepli, and Morgan. At the far edge of the lawn, you can also encounter four retired Flaming Fists chatting together on a bench. Next, approach the Statue of Balduran in the middle of the grounds to view Eugenie Kenridge on a romantic outing with Wendel Ashgrove.

  3. 3

    Dig the Central Dirt Mound

Head south of the central monument toward the garden pathways at coordinates X: -130 Y: -20. Passing a DC 20 Survival check allows you to unearth a hidden treasure chest filled with gold, an assorted potion, and a very rare spell scroll. Ensure you pack a shovel in your pack so you can immediately extract the dirt cache once it reveals itself.

Tip: Bring a companion with high Wisdom and Survival proficiency to successfully reveal this difficult dirt mound.

Watch out: If you fail the DC 20 check without a shovel ready to manually dig the precise spot, you may leave valuable high-tier scrolls behind.

  4. 4

    Scout the Waterfall Pool

Continue toward the waterfall pool, where two children named Conall and Emen are loudly squabbling over a misplaced ball. Keep your eyes sharp as you approach the pool and pass a DC 10 Perception check to spot cloaked Bhaalist murderers waiting in hiding. Rather than blundering straight into the center, quietly maneuver your companions around through the upper flowerbeds at X: -135 Y: -5 or the staircase at X: -86 Y: -40 to establish advantageous high-ground flanking positions.

Tip: Setting up your ranged party members on the elevated stairs or ledges lets you initiate a surprise round against the hidden assassins.

  5. 5

Confront the Possessed Officer and Secure the Parasite

After the skirmish, approach the patrol commander Manip Edenosa (or Fist Griff if she died earlier) near the fountain, who speaks as a vessel directly possessed by the Absolute's Elder Brain. Once the leader perishes, you must loot her guarded, red-outlined corpse to collect her Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen. Because the remaining Flaming Fist guards consider touching the body a crime, make sure to use concealment spells, darkness, or a distraction to grab the larva undetected.

Tip: Use invisibility or cast fog over the guarded corpse to safely scoop up the specimen without turning surviving guards hostile.

Watch out: Agreeing to join the cultists' slaughter lets them flee peacefully without killing Edenosa, which will cause you to miss the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen entirely.

Bhaalist Cultist Proposition

Approaching the Bhaalists near the waterfall pool after allying with Orin (or killing her)

  • Agree to join the slaughter→ The Bhaalists slaughter fleeing civilians while the Flaming Fist watch, and the cultists safely retreat with no fight.
  • Refuse to join→ Initiates combat against the Bhaal cultists.

Most players pick: Refuse to join

Outlander background characters receive the Urban Jungle inspiration upon finishing the ambush battle
