The short version

What matters

  • •Defeating Anders and his disguised Zariel cultists to secure the Sword of Justice and keep Karlach alive.
  • •Grabbing the Soul Coin from the upper exterior balcony to power Karlach's infernal engine.
  • •Solving the dual stone chair puzzle in the cellar to loot the Gloves of Heroism and armory weapons [x2, x4].

Common mistakes

  • •Rushing into melee against Anders without crowd control; his Level 5 Divine Smites and Great Weapon Master can kill a companion in a single turn.
  • •Walking through the cellar secret doorway without spotting the floor pressure plate, releasing choking poison gas from vents across the basement rooms.
  • •Leaving the southern cliff path without holding `Alt` or checking around the ladder, which leaves the Toll Collector's Key lost in the grass.

What you can skip

  • •Siding with Anders, as killing Karlach forfeits one of the primary companion storylines of the entire game.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Approach the Tollhouse and Retrieve the Exterior Key

Head southeast from The Risen Road waypoint to reach the bluff overlooking the river, where dead caravan guards and hyenas surround the ruined tollhouse. Before stepping inside, descend the southern slope toward the river to find the corpse of a Dead Toll Collector beside a wooden ladder. Search the ground right near the body to pick up the Toll Collector's Key, using your highlight key to spot it in the grass.

Tip: Hold your item highlight button (`Alt` by default) near the bottom of the ladder so you don't miss the small key in the grass.

  2. 2

Investigate the Ground Floor and Question the Dead

Enter the tollhouse main room peacefully if Karlach is not in your active party; you can trade mundane supplies with Cyrel and speak with Anders to hear his fabricated story about hunting a dangerous devil. Before confronting him or committing to any deals, sneak into the adjoining back room to locate the Dead Refugee lying on the floor. Cast *Speak with Dead* on the corpse to uncover the truth: Anders and his crew are not holy warriors of Tyr, but fallen paladins sworn to the archdevil Zariel.

Tip: Trade with Cyrel before triggering combat or dialogue confrontations, as her inventory will become inaccessible once hostiles are engaged.

Watch out: Siding with Anders to kill Karlach permanently cuts off her recruitment, companion questline, and romance.

  3. 3

Confront Anders and the False Paladins

Speak to Anders again to accuse him of serving Zariel, or walk in with Karlach in your active party to trigger instant hostility. Anders hits exceedingly hard with Great Weapon Master swings and Divine Smites, so crowd-control him immediately with spells like *Hold Person* or *Tasha's Hideous Laughter* while taking down Trynn and Cyrel. Once all three cultists are slain, loot the Sword of Justice directly from Anders' body.

Key fight: Anders and the "Paladins of Tyr"

Tip: Position ranged attackers or spellcasters outside on the veranda or through the open doorways to avoid getting cornered by Anders' high-damage melee attacks.

Watch out: Anders can down a squishy party member in a single turn if he connects with a critical Divine Smite.

  4. 4

Survive Karlach's Rage and Loot the Balcony

If Karlach was present for the battle, stand back immediately as she flies into an infernal rage, smashing furniture and setting the room on fire. Wait patiently without approaching until she finishes venting her fury, then speak with her to safely calm her down and progress her companion quest. Afterwards, take the interior ladder upstairs to the upper wooden balcony terrace (`X: 109, Y: 550`) to collect a loose Soul Coin resting on the floor boards.

Tip: Extinguish lingering fires or jump across burning floor patches so party members do not take unnecessary damage while Karlach calms down.

Watch out: Attempting to interact with Karlach while she is mid-tantrum can cause accidental fire damage or interrupt the conversation flow.

  5. 5

Return to the tollhouse main room and interact with the Ornate Wooden Hatch to d

tip: If you don't have the key, you can destroy the vault door with heavy bludgeoning or force damage.

Tip: Carry Thieves' Tools in case you prefer to lockpick the cellar hatch and internal doors rather than hunting down the key.

Watch out: Stepping carelessly through the vault hallway will trigger flammable grease or fire traps that can quickly wipe low-health companions.

  6. 6

Solve the Stone Chairs Puzzle for the Hidden Vault

Head to the blank stone wall at the rear of the vault corridor, which is flanked on either side by two stone chairs [x4]. Ungroup your party and seat one companion in each chair simultaneously (or place heavy crates/vases on both seats) to cause the hidden wall to sink into the floor [x4]. Before stepping inside the secret chamber, detect and disarm the Marble Floor Plate directly past the doorway to prevent toxic gas vents from flooding the basement. Walk to the wooden chest at the back of the secret room (`X: -674, Y: -401`) to claim the Gloves of Heroism along with racks of weapons and gold piles.

Tip: If you use party members to sit in the chairs, keep them seated until you have disarmed the Marble Floor Plate inside, or place heavy vases on the seats so the doorway stays open permanently [x4].

Watch out: Stepping on the inner Marble Floor Plate without disarming it vents Simple Toxin across every room in the cellar.

  • Refuse or attack Anders→ initiates combat with Anders, Trynn, and Cyrel immediately, allowing you to loot the Sword of Justice

Delivering Karlach's Head to Anders

Talking to Anders at the tollhouse after killing Karlach by the river

  • Hand over Karlach's head→ Anders gives you the Sword of Justice (+1 Greatsword) and the "paladins" survive; Karlach is permanently dead/unrecruitable, though Wyll later receives the Infernal Robe from Mizora
  • Attack Anders instead→ initiates combat against Anders and his crew; you can loot the Sword of Justice anyway

Most players pick: Attack Anders instead (or side with Karlach originally, as killing her permanently locks out a companion for no exclusiv

Handing over the head closes Karlach's companion line permanently

Confronting Anders with Karlach

Returning to the tollhouse with Karlach in your active party

  • Slay Anders and his followers→ clears Karlach's hunters, advances her quest "Our Fiery Friend", and lets you loot the Sword of Justice and tollhouse freely
  • Tell Karlach to stand down and side with Anders→ triggers combat against Karlach alongside Anders; Karlach dies permanently

Most players pick: Slay Anders and his followers

Entering the tollhouse with Karlach skips trade opportunities with Cyrel and immediately provokes the fight

Weaknesses and resistances: No inherent damage resistances or weaknesses, but vulnerable to crowd control (Command, Hold Person, Blindness, Tasha's Hideous Laughter), disarming attacks, and radiant/fire/force burst damage

Tactics: Position ranged attackers and spellcasters on the high ground (the upper-level balconies/roofs and ladders) to shoot down into the office; initiate with a surprise attack through the second-story balcony rather than clumping through the front doorway choke; use Disarm or heat metal to strip Anders of the Sword of Justice before he can land Divine Smites

Rewards: Sword of Justice (rare greatsword), heavy armor, assorted scrolls, supply caches, and progressing/completing the quest "Hunt the Devil"
