The short version

What matters

  • •Rescuing Counsellor Florrick immediately, which awards you a top-tier Lightning Charge weapon (especially The Spellsparkler) and keeps Duke Ravengard's questline active for Acts 2 and 3.
  • •Grabbing the thunder-jumping maul Hamarhraft from the upper gilded chest before it is destroyed or overlooked.
  • •Gaining the Engraved Key peacefully from Salazon to guarantee safe passage down into the Zhentarim Hideout.

Common mistakes

  • •Taking a Long Rest or returning to Camp upon sighting the black smoke, which immediately burns the building down and kills Florrick and Benryn.
  • •Opening the door to Benryn's room in real-time mode; the explosive backdraft will instantly spread and burn him before you can dislodge the beam.
  • •Forgetting to use the Help action on Benryn after lifting the timber off him, leaving him pinned on the burning floor to die.

What you can skip

  • •The dead halfling's Suite Key on the west perimeter if you have high Sleight of Hand, as all interior bedroom doors can be picked or smashed.
  • •Keeping Mirileth's dowry ring for yourself, as its vendor gold value is negligible compared to companion inspiration and approval.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Breach the Burning Main Doors

When you enter the courtyard near the Waukeen's Rest waypoint, rush to the front gates where Gauntlet Yeva and her Flaming Fist squad are battering the blocked tavern doors. Interacting with the doors triggers a DC 10 Strength check to shove them open, or you can smash them down with bludgeoning attacks or have Wyll kick them open if he is in your party. Before running inside, cast Command: Drop from stealth on Gauntlet Yeva or use non-lethal disarm maneuvers to steal her greatsword without turning the squad hostile.

Tip: Having Wyll interact with the doors automatically succeeds the check without rolling.

Watch out: Long Resting, visiting camp, or walking away once entering the courtyard permanently burns the inn down and kills all trapped NPCs.

  2. 2

    Rescue Counsellor Florrick

Head up the main staircase to the second floor where Counsellor Florrick is shouting behind a shattered door. Attack and break the wooden debris blocking her doorway so she can escape downstairs into the courtyard. Once the path is clear, she dashes outside to safety, advancing your quest to find Duke Ravengard.

Tip: Splashing water or casting Create Water along her floor path keeps her from taking accidental fire chip damage.

Watch out: If you linger or leave without breaking Florrick's barricade, she will suffocate in the flames and lock out key Act 2 and Act 3 content.

  3. 3

    Save Benryn and Grab Hamarhraft

Across the upper walkway to the west, enter Turn-Based Mode immediately before opening the door to the adjacent burning room to prevent the sudden explosive backdraft from downing your party. Free the trapped half-elf Benryn with a DC 10 Strength or DC 15 Investigation check, then immediately use the Help action to revive him. Before guiding him out toward the western terrace, unlock the gilded chest in the adjoining burning bedroom at (X: -85, Y: 631) to loot the maul Hamarhraft.

Tip: Casting Create Water on the floor extinguishes the fire explosive trigger entirely and gives Benryn Fire Resistance.

Watch out: If you fail to use the Help action on Benryn immediately after lifting the timber, he remains incapacitated and burns to death.

  4. 4

    Claim Florrick's Reward

Return to the courtyard to speak with Counsellor Florrick, who informs you that Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard was abducted by Absolute drow and goblin raiders heading toward Moonrise Towers. She offers you your choice of one rare Lightning Charge weapon as a token of gratitude before departing for the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Conclude your conversation to select either The Spellsparkler, The Sparky Points, or The Joltshooter.

Tip: The Spellsparkler is exceptionally powerful for spellcasters relying on multi-hit cantrips like Eldritch Blast or Magic Missile.

Watch out: You can only select one of the three lightning weapons from Florrick, permanently locking out the other two.

  5. 5

Mirileth's Corpse and the Dowry Ring

Follow Benryn into the west wing's second floor where he collapses in grief beside the corpse of his wife, Mirileth. Cast Speak with Dead on Mirileth to learn that she hid their dowry ring inside a haystack in the barn at (X: -99, Y: 619). Head to the hay pile to uncover a hidden gilded chest, then decide whether to return the dowry ring to Benryn for moral approval or keep it to sell.

Tip: Interrogating Mirileth with Speak with Dead drops the Perception check DC on the haystack down to 0.

Watch out: If you keep the dowry ring after finding it, Benryn curses you and you miss out on good-aligned companion approvals.

  6. 6

    Uncover the Zhentarim Front Barn

Head to the back outbuilding at the northwest corner of the estate where Salazon hides behind explosive Oil and Firewine barrels. Approach cautiously and pacify him by reciting the secret password ("Little serpent, long shadow"), passing a DC 10 Persuasion check, or flashing the Zhentarim thief-sign if playing a Rogue. Accepting his surrender rewards you with the Engraved Key, which unlocks the floor hatch and wardrobe hidden in the back corner that lead down into the Zhentarim Hideout.

Tip: Do not approach the ox in the nearby shed while playing a Drow, or it will immediately turn hostile.

Watch out: Attacking Salazon or failing his dialogue checks causes him to firebolt the surrounding barrels, triggering a massive explosion that destroys the entrance loot.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Rescuing Counsellor Florrick

When entering the burning inn

  • Break down the shattered door on the upper floor to free Florrick→ Florrick survives, progresses Wyll's personal quest, provides a choice of rare Lightning Charge weapons, and returns as an ally in Acts 2 and 3
  • Ignore her, flee, or Long Rest→ Florrick burns to death, permanently locking out her questline, the weapon choice, and her Act 3 alliance

Most players pick: Break down the shattered door to free Florrick

Leaving the area or taking a Long Rest instantly kills Florrick and burns the inn to ash.

Florrick's Quest Reward

After talking to Florrick in the courtyard

  • Choose The Spellsparkler→ You receive the rare quarterstaff that grants Lightning Charges on spell casts
  • Choose The Sparky Points→ You receive the rare trident that grants Lightning Charges on hits
  • Choose The Joltshooter→ You receive the rare heavy crossbow that grants Lightning Charges on ranged hits

Most players pick: Choose The Spellsparkler (exceptional for caster builds)

Rescuing Benryn

In the burning corridor opposite Florrick

  • Pass a Strength/Investigation check to lift the beam and Help him escape→ Benryn survives and leads you to his dead wife Mirileth and the Dowry side quest
  • Leave him trapped or let the fire consume him→ Benryn burns to death, permanently failing "Rescue the Trapped Man"

Most players pick: Lift the beam and guide him out

Opening the doorway to his room triggers an explosive fire backdraft; enter Turn-Based Mode immediately.

Returning the Dowry Ring to Benryn

After finding the Dowry Ring in the haystack barn

  • Hand over the Dowry Ring→ Benryn thanks you, gains emotional closure, and the quest completes
  • Keep the ring for yourself→ Benryn becomes furious and you keep the ring to sell for roughly 115 GP or equip

Most players pick: Hand over the Dowry Ring

Giving the ring provides positive approval with good-aligned companions like Wyll, Karlach, and Gale.

Confronting Salazon at the Back Barn

Inside the back barn leading to the hatch

  • Give the password ("Little serpent, long shadow"), pass dialogue checks, or flash Rogue thief-cant→ Salazon hands over the Engraved Key and permits safe passage into the Zhentarim Hideout
  • Fail checks or attack→ Salazon detonates the fire barrels, likely damaging the party and aggroing Zhentarim below

Most players pick: Give the password or pass the dialogue checks

Password is learned from Rugan in the cave on Risen Road or via Speak with Dead on him.
