Baldur's Gate 3 guide · The initial settlement outside the city gates ✓ Checked against sources
← All areas in this guide

Rivington serves as the outer suburb where players arrive upon reaching the outskirts of Baldur's Gate in Act Three, crowded with displaced refugees and guarded checkpoints. While here, travelers can explore local hotspots like the Circus of the Last Days, investigate a grim murder at the Open Hand Temple, or assist the Ironhand Gnomes hiding beneath the settlement. Progression requires finding a way through or around the heavy security preventing refugees from crossing into Wyrm's Crossing.

The short version

What matters

  • •Slay the newborn Mind Flayer under the Abandoned Windmill (X: 44, Y: -32) to take the Ring of Truthfulness and a Mind Flayer Brain.
  • •Speak with Wulbren Bongle inside Angleiron's Cellar beneath the general store to acquire a Runepowder Bomb.
  • •Visit the Circus of the Last Days and defeat the Dribbles imposter to loot the Clown Hammer.
  • •Intervene in the Western Beach skirmish to claim both the Corpsegrinder from Caïros and the Gleamdance Dagger from Farlin.

Common mistakes

  • •Walking into the Lower City before visiting the detached barn (X: 36, Y: -149), which causes the Strange Ox to disappear permanently along with its unique items.
  • •Submitting blindly to the Steel Watcher scan at the South Span Checkpoint, which triggers hostile detection and an immediate guard confrontation.
  • •Agreeing to smuggle the Strange Ox into Baldur's Gate and then dropping or failing to deliver the apple, as this immediately breaks an Oath of the Crown.

What you can skip

  • •Attempting Speak with Dead on the Western Beach combatants, as their disfigurement and decapitation render the spell useless.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Arrival and Refugee Camp

As you journey north from Reithwin Town into Rivington at the start of Act Three, inspect the small camp near your initial descent (X: -31, Y: -104) to loot sacks and backpacks for a Potion of Superior Healing and a Potion of Greater Healing. Continue to the base of the hill to meet the young refugee Yenna and her cat Grub, who ask for aid and can join your campsite. Before pushing further into town, head over to the detached barn at X: 36, Y: -149 to find the Strange Ox, where you can agree to smuggle it into the Lower City as an apple or provoke it for the Hat of Fire Acuity and Shapeshifter's Boon Ring.

Tip: Agreeing to smuggle the Strange Ox gives you an apple to carry into the Lower City, but failing to deliver it breaks an Oath of the Crown.

Watch out: Do not advance into the Lower City before speaking to the Strange Ox, or it will vanish forever.

  2. 2

    Arfur's Mansion and Requisitioned Barn

Follow the road north to Arfur's Mansion at X: 11, Y: -95, where you encounter Arfur Gregorio arguing with the squatter Ben Golewits alongside hired Rivington Rats over displaced refugees occupying the home. Choose whether to evict the refugees for Arfur or side with Ben Golewits to chase off the homeowner and his muscle. Next, head east across the road to the Requisitioned Barn at X: 83, Y: -108, a supply depot closely monitored by the Flaming Fist.

Watch out: Siding with Arfur forces the desperate squatters out, while threatening him drives the merchant away and triggers his departure.

  3. 3

    Circus of the Last Days

Make your way to the Circus of the Last Days at X: 22, Y: -75, where the necromancer Lucretious manages a visiting entertainment troupe. Approach the center stage to investigate the performance and confront the Dribbles impostor, defeating the doppelganger in battle. Loot the fallen performer once the dust settles to claim the Clown Hammer.

Tip: Keep an eye out for Orin the Red, as she will impersonate two early NPCs you talk to among Zethino, Lens, Gyldro Angleiron, Fist Rowan, or a Dying Stone Lord Thug.

  4. 4

    Rivington General and Angleiron's Cellar

Visit Rivington General at X: 8, Y: -32 to browse wares from the trader Exxvikyap, then seek out the blacksmith Gyldro Angleiron. Gain entry to Angleiron's Cellar either through a hatch inside Gyldro's building or through a sea cave at X: 30, Y: 29. Down in the hideout, speak with the exiled Ironhand gnome leader Wulbren Bongle to receive a Runepowder Bomb.

Tip: You can trade with local merchants around the settlement such as the Sharran merchant Ferg Drogher, the peddler Mattis, and the courier Danzo Arkwright.

  5. 5

    Western Beach and Subterranean Secrets

Pass a DC 20 Perception check at the Rivington Well (X: 10, Y: -16) to access the caves below, where you can jump across gaps to dig up a Buried Chest at X: 40, Y: -878. Shoot the internal winch to breach the stone wall exiting to the Western Beach at X: 58, Y: 51. Along the coast, you will encounter a battle between Caïros's Stone Lord Thugs and Farlin's Guild operatives, where you can fight either side, take on both, or let them clash from afar to loot the Corpsegrinder and Gleamdance Dagger.

Key fight: Skirmish at the Western Beach

Watch out: The combatants on the beach end up disfigured and decapitated during the violence, preventing any use of Speak with Dead on their corpses.

  6. 6

    South Span Checkpoint

Continue past the Sword Coast Couriers (X: 13, Y: 10), where you can confront the abusive kennel trainer Angry Mar'hyah, and head toward the locked Eastern Gate to plunder a heavy chest for a random Very Rare scroll while dodging guard sightlines. Approach the South Span Checkpoint guarded by Gauntlet Edwynna, Flaming Fist forces, and a Steel Watcher barring entry to Wyrm's Crossing. Choose between bribing the guards and submitting to the Steel Watcher's scan—which risks arrest, battle, or ally intervention—or seeking alternate paths to bypass the checkpoint entirely.

Tip: Ulma leads the Gur monster hunters at their nearby Gur Camp, offering another encounter before you breach the city.

Watch out: Submitting to the Steel Watcher scan without preparation forces an immediate arrest confrontation or a lethal battle with the checkpoint guards.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Fate of the Strange Ox

Speaking with the Strange Ox in the detached barn

  • Help smuggle the creature→ Turns into an apple for you to transport to the Lower City, though failing to deliver it breaks an Oath of the Crown
  • Decline, attack, or travel to the Lower City without talking to it→ Becomes hostile or vanishes for good, dropping the Hat of Fire Acuity and Shapeshifter's Boon Ring if slain

Most players pick: Help smuggle the creature

Entering the Lower City before speaking with the creature makes it disappear permanently

Dispute at Arfur's Mansion

Confronting the crowd outside Arfur Gregorio's home

  • Back Arfur and his hired thugs→ Evicts the refugee family from the residence
  • Back the refugee squatters→ Drives away Arfur and his hired muscle

Most players pick: Back the refugee squatters

Navigating the South Span Checkpoint

Trying to cross the barrier leading toward Wyrm's Crossing

  • Submit to the scanner and pay the bribe→ Steel Watcher identifies the group, triggering an arrest attempt, combat, or rescue by previously met allies
  • Use secondary pathways around the gate→ Sidesteps an immediate clash with the Steel Watcher and guards

Most players pick: Use secondary pathways around the gate

Key fights

Open Hand Temple Crypt Doppelgängers

Enemies: Zomm, Muzz, Rudd (disguised Bhaalist doppelgängers)

Threats: Notable abilities: Mindreader (imposes Disadvantage on all incoming ranged attacks), Morphic Ambush (transforms to cause Ambushed status, enabling Multiattack), high-damage Multiattack claw strikes, poison coating/mucus

Weaknesses and resistances: Resistances & weaknesses: High Dexterity saves (+7) but low Wisdom (+1), Charisma (+2), and Strength (0); vulnerable to close-quarters melee bursts, melee stun/prone conditions, and high-DC Wisdom disabling spells (e.g., *Hold Person*, *Hypnotic Pattern*)

Tactics: Winning tactics & positions: Ambush them near the subterranean secret alcove chokepoint beyond the bookshelf button rather than engaging in open space; avoid ranged projectile attacks due to Mindreader and prioritize hard crowd-control spells targeting their weak Wisdom/Strength, or rush them with melee smites and heavy burst damage before they execute multiattack rotations

Rewards: Rewards: Flowery Key (opens the secret murder room in Fraygo's Flophouse), Stillmaker (Very Rare +2 dagger, the murder weapon found in the nearby dirt hole), Clown's Severed Torso (for "Find Dribbles the Clown"), Crawler Mucus, and story progression for "Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders"

Skirmish at the Western Beach

Enemies: Caïros and the Stone Lord Thugs (vs. Farlin and The Guild operatives; can fight either side or both)

Threats: Notable abilities: Caïros wields Corpsegrinder (deals extra Bludgeoning and Thunder damage with Grand Slam AOE); Stone Lord thugs use heavy melee strikes, Entangle, and crowd-control throwables; Guild operatives use sneak attacks and Uncanny Dodge

Weaknesses and resistances: Resistances & weaknesses: Both groups lack significant elemental resistances or mental saving throw bonuses; vulnerable to AOE surface effects (fire, ice, grease) and positioning exploits on the sandbanks

Tactics: Winning tactics & positions: Approach the beach from the southern cliffside path or high-ground overlook overlooking the moored Moonrise cargo boat; initiate combat from elevated rocks using ranged AOE spells (*Fireball*, *Hunger of Hadar*) down onto the tightly packed enemies along the water's edge, letting the opposing NPC faction soak early frontline attacks before clearing the survivors

Rewards: Rewards: Corpsegrinder (Very Rare +2 Warhammer looted from Caïros), Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen (found on Stone Lord cargo and corpses), Gleamdance Dagger (looted from Farlin if fighting the Guild), gold, and progress in the quest "Aid the Underduke" (smooths entry into the Lower City Guildhall)

Enemies

Dribbles the Clown
Steal / drop Clown Hammer

A shapechanged doppelganger who reveals himself during a circus stage act alongside hostile beast handlers

Shops and people

  • The Rivington General: Operated by the clerk Exxvikyap, selling weapons and armor such as the Bonespike Garb and The Dancing Breeze

Tips

  • Keep Shadowheart at camp or separated from your party when approaching the merchant Ferg Drogher, as her presence triggers unique dialogue that can permanently lock you out of trading with him.
