Moonrise Towers (Act 2 Assault)
After resolving the Nightsong's fate in the Shadowfell, the party unites with Jaheira and the Harpers to launch a direct assault against the Absolute's forces occupying the fortress. The objective is to fight through the fortified ground floor and ascend through the upper levels to reach the rooftop, confronting General Ketheric Thorm once his immortality is stripped away.

The short version
What matters
- •Convince Jaheira at the entrance bridge to join as a controlled party follower so she does not die to friendly fire or enemy spells.
- •Loot Disciple Z'rell for her Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen and the Absolute's Protector shield before leaving the main hall.
- •Search Ketheric Thorm's bedroom on the first floor for his family journals to unlock persuasion opportunities against him [cite: 1.2.6].
Common mistakes
- •Rushing straight through the main ground-floor doors without crowd control; enemy adepts will stack *Black Hole* and *Hunger of Hadar* on the stairs to wipe the Harpers.
- •Blowing all your highest-level spell slots trying to burst Ketheric to zero on the roof; he triggers a cinematic escape once reduced to roughly two-thirds health.
- •Descending into the hollow tower chasm before looting the quarters and talking to Jaheira, locking off upper-floor items permanently.
What you can skip
- •You can safely bypass clearing the basement prison if you already broke out the gnomes and tieflings earlier, as it only contains an optional fight with minor loot.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Marshalling at the Gate
When you arrive at the Moonrise Towers Waypoint, proceed across the fortified bridge toward the gates to find Jaheira and the surviving Harpers marshalled for battle. Speak with Jaheira immediately and persuade her to join your party directly rather than leading her detachment alone into the fortress. Before breaching the structure, prepare high-initiative party members and area-of-effect denial spells to counter cultists positioning inside.
Tip: Asking Jaheira to fight at your side makes her a directly controllable ally on your turns, preventing suicidal AI charges.
Watch out: If you let Jaheira fight independently, she can easily be killed in the opening crossfire, permanently locking you out of her recruitment and Minsc's Act 3 questline.
-
2
Breaching the Main Audience Hall
Push through the heavy ground-floor entrance doors into the main hall to engage Disciple Z'rell and the garrison defense. Counter Z'rell's attempts to cast *Black Hole* and eliminate the high-ground archers and adepts before they blanket the threshold with *Hunger of Hadar*. Once the defenders are down, search Disciple Z'rell's remains in the center of the hall to claim her rare shield and tadpole before checking the side rooms.
Key fight: Disciple Z'rell (Ground Floor Siege)Tip: Counterspell or focus-fire Z'rell in round one to prevent her from pulling your clustered party into overlapping area hazards.
Watch out: Any unique vendor items from Lann Tarv, Roah Moonglow, or Araj Oblodra that you did not purchase before the Shadowfell are now permanently forfeit.
-
3
The First Floor Landing
Climb the main stairs from the ground floor up to the first floor landing and library where Radija and a pack of flying ghouls guard the hallway. Destroy the necromites and eliminate Radija to secure access to the upper level's private quarters and roof stairs. Search the hallway thoroughly and check the nearby side rooms for lingering cultist reinforcements.
Key fight: Radija (First Floor Library/Landing)Tip: Keep your ranged combatants back on the stairwell to prevent flying ghouls from swarming your backline.
-
4
Raiding the Upper Quarters
Before heading out to the roof, enter the hallway's adjoining chambers to plunder Balthazar's ritual workshop and Ketheric Thorm's private bedroom. Interact with the protruding book ("Musty Tomes") on the bookshelf in Balthazar's room and insert a heart into the emerging Ancient Altar to access the secret laboratory, then enter Ketheric's bedroom to loot his chest and read his family letters. Be prepared for a combat encounter against an aggressive Mimic disguised as a chest in the adjoining bedroom quarters.
Tip: Read the dog-eared letters from Isobel and Melidia in Ketheric's bedroom to unlock critical dialogue checks for the encounters ahead.
Watch out: Attacking or opening the suspicious chest in the bedroom without buffs will trigger a surprise round from the Mimic.

5
Rooftop Confrontation with Ketheric
Open the heavy double doors to step out onto the Moonrise Towers Rooftop and confront General Ketheric Thorm and his Myrkulite retinue. Utilize your earlier knowledge of his family to challenge his convictions via dialogue, then focus fire down his surrounding adds while bringing Ketheric below half health. Once battered, Ketheric triggers a cutscene summoning a giant tentacle to drag Dame Aylin into the central tower chasm, escaping down into the depths.
Key fight: Ketheric Thorm (Rooftop Confrontation)Tip: Clear the Necromites and hound first so Aylin and your frontline can hit Ketheric without taking constant reaction strikes.
Watch out: You cannot kill Ketheric here; expending all your highest-level spell slots on him before he flees leaves you depleted for the descent.
-
6
Securing the Chasm Descent
Speak with Dame Aylin's allies and Jaheira near the smoking breach where Ketheric plummeted into the tower's hollow center. Invite Jaheira to officially join your four-person party roster as a full companion if you wish to bring her into the depths. Rest and equip your team at the precipice before interacting with the hollow tower entrance to descend after Thorm into the Mind Flayer Colony.
Tip: You can swap Jaheira into your active party roster here even if she merely accompanied you as a guest during the courtyard assault.
Watch out: Descending into the chasm is a point of no return for this sector of the fortress—finish all looting on the upper and lower floors first.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Deploying Jaheira for the Breach
Talking to Jaheira at the bridge before attacking the ground floor
- "You should fight by my side"→ Jaheira attaches directly to your party as a controllable 5th follower, drastically increasing her survivability and securing her later recruitment
- "Lead your Harpers"→ Jaheira acts as independent AI during the battle, regularly rushing into fatal enemy AoE spells like *Hunger of Hadar* and risking permanent death
Most players pick: "You should fight by my side"
If Jaheira dies here, her companion questline and the ability to recruit Minsc in Act 3 are permanently lost.
Confronting Ketheric Thorm on the Rooftop
Dialogue confrontation before the Phase 1 rooftop battle
- Pass the Persuasion/Intimidation checks referencing his past/family→ Ketheric wavers, laying the required groundwork to talk him into committing suicide later in the Mind Flayer Colony and completely skipping his Phase 1 colony boss fight
- Attack or fail dialogue checks→ Ketheric remains resolute; you must fight his full form both on the roof and again in the colony before the Apostle of Myrkul appears
Most players pick: Pass the Persuasion/Intimidation checks
Requires reading his late wife's letter in his bedroom quarters beforehand to unlock the best dialogue options.
Recruiting Jaheira to Descend into the Colony
Speaking to Jaheira by the hollow tower chasm after Ketheric flees the roof
- "Face Ketheric with me"→ Jaheira officially joins your camp and active roster as a full permanent companion, entering the Mind Flayer Colony with you
- "Wait here with the Harpers"→ Jaheira stays behind at Moonrise Towers to hold the surface; she remains recruitable in the Great Hall after Act 2 concludes
Most players pick: "Face Ketheric with me"
Jumping down the hollow tower chasm is a point of no return for surface Act 2 areas.
Checklists
Don't miss 0/4
Key fights
Enemies: Disciple Z'rell, Zealots, Adepts, Cultists, Ogre, and Bugbear guards
Threats: Z'rell casts *Black Hole* (crowd control, slow) and lethal *Hunger of Hadar* / *Sleet Storm*, alongside enemy archers raining elemental and push arrows from overhead rafters
Weaknesses and resistances: Humanoid crowd control vulnerability, prone to Silence and Counterspell; no unusual damage resistances
Tactics: Avoid clumping at the front doorway/chokepoint where AoE spells trap allies; place Ice Storm, Fireball, or Wall of Fire across the central throne area, pick off snipers in the rafters using misty step or ranged focus fire, and counterspell Z'rell immediately
Rewards: Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, Ring of Free Action, assorted martial gear, and access to the upper levels
Enemies: Radija (Mistress of Souls) and Necromites (often accompanied by Glourik if not slain earlier)
Threats: High Evocation wizard spells like *Fireball*, Necrotic damage riders (*Grave Magic*), and Necromite swarm melee
Weaknesses and resistances: Low physical defense, no elemental resistances, vulnerable to burst physical damage and Silence
Tactics: Disengage from the narrow library corridor to avoid bunched *Fireball* damage, silence or focus down Radija before her turn, and clear the frail Necromites using Bludgeoning or radiant AoE
Rewards: Myrkulite Scourge, scroll loot, and safe passage to the fortress roof
Enemies: General Ketheric Thorm, Susurrus Bloom/Squire (undead hound), Necromite swarms, and Cultist guards (optionally Kar'niss if alive)
Threats: Heavy Radiant/Necrotic smites, multi-attacks, high AC, summoning waves of Necromites via Incubate Death, and crowd control; invulnerable until Nightsong was previously freed/weakened
Weaknesses and resistances: Susceptible to Radiant damage, control spells (Hold Person/Command), and focus-fire; resistant to necrotic
Tactics: Position high-ground ranged attackers, lock down or burst down Ketheric Thorm quickly to trigger his cinematic retreat at 40% HP (avoiding endless add spawns), and keep allies spread to avoid sweeping smites
Rewards: Access to the tower hollow/Mind Flayer Colony pit, narrative progression, and assorted consumable/equipment drops
Enemies: Death Shepherd, Myrkulite Cultists (Mistresses of Souls), and Necromite swarms / zombies
Threats: *No Rest for the Wicked* (infinitely revives fallen undead at full HP), heavy Greatsword Cleave damage, and incoming *Fireball* spells from cult mages
Weaknesses and resistances: Susceptible to Radiant damage and Turn Undead; resistant to Piercing, Bludgeoning, and Slashing from non-magical sources; cannot cast spells requiring verbal components (Silent)
Tactics: Funnel enemies through the prison stairway choke, burst down the Death Shepherd first so it cannot resurrect slain cult minions, and use counterspells against the Mistresses of Souls
Rewards: Greatsword, standard armor/scroll loot, and clearing the Moonrise lower sublevels
Enemies
leads the cultist defense in the main entrance foyer and casts devastating area-of-effect spells like Black Tentacles
a necromancer stationed on the first floor alongside her Necromites defending the passage to the roof
fought atop the rooftop where he summons adds and eventually retreats downward once heavily damaged
leads an optional encounter against undead forces in the lower prison cells alongside Myrkulite cultists
Tips
- Speak to Jaheira before charging into the fortress doors to invite her to join your team as a controllable companion during the assault, preventing her fragile AI from dying in combat.
