The short version

What matters

  • •Inspecting Lady Esther's wares early to buy build-defining gear like The Graceful Cloth and Winter's Clutches.
  • •Focusing down both Death Shepherds immediately in the western ravine to shut down endless undead resurrections.
  • •Speaking with Elminster on the western path to stabilize Gale's Netherese orb and advance his companion quest.

Common mistakes

  • •Entering the Mountain Pass before concluding Emerald Grove and Waukeen's Rest quests, which permanently auto-fails them.
  • •Letting a Death Shepherd cast No Rest for the Wicked on a fallen Shepherd ally, causing an endless loop of resurrections (with full HP on Tactician and Honour Mode).
  • •Handing a real Githyanki egg to Lady Esther, which guarantees the massacre of the Society of Brilliance in Act 3.

What you can skip

  • •Trying to force-open locked crates in the undead ravine during combat; wipe the Death Shepherds first and loot in peace.
  • •Attempting to resolve the Blue Jay's request on the trail; the nest and its eagles sit up inside the separate monastery grounds.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Enter Rosymorn Monastery Trail

Enter from either the Risen Road bridge at (X: -49, Y: -180) or the Goblin Camp mountain defile at (X: -103, Y: -205). Confirm the transition prompt to enter the pass, and make camp immediately to witness your Dream Visitor scene if you have not seen it already. Follow the descending path until you discover the Trielta Crags waypoint at (X: -62, Y: -146) and the nearby Lathander statue at (X: -62, Y: -133).

Tip: Pass the DC 10 Religion check on the Lathander statue's plaque to discover the holy origin of the monastery ahead.

Watch out: Confirming the transition prompt into the Mountain Pass permanently auto-resolves open Wilderness quests, cutting off the Emerald Grove and burning Waukeen's Rest.

  2. 2

    Deal with Lady Esther

Head northeast from the Trielta Crags waypoint to find Lady Esther's campsite at (X: -43, Y: -128). Speak with her to learn about her Society of Brilliance employer and accept her proposition to acquire a Githyanki egg from the crèche. Browse her merchant stock to buy key gear, or deceive her with an Owlbear Egg via a DC 21 Deception, Persuasion, or Nature check for quick gold.

Tip: If you give her an Owlbear Egg or defer handing over a real egg, the Society of Brilliance remains peaceful in Act 3 rather than being slaughtered by a hatched githyanki.

Watch out: Attacking or killing Lady Esther without buying her exclusive equipment locks you out of purchasing the rest of her rare inventory.

  3. 3

Cross the Ravine via the Cable Car

Proceed north along the mountain trail to the clifftop overlook at (X: -47, Y: -74). Interact with the Cable Car Wheel and haul the suspended car across the chasm to your side. Load your entire party onto the platform, activate the inner lever, and ride across to reach the approach toward Rosymorn Monastery.

Tip: Use a character with 16+ Strength or cast Enhance Ability: Bull's Strength to easily clear the DC 15 Strength check on the winch.

Watch out: Stand firmly in the center of the gondola platform before pulling the lever, as characters near the ledge can slide off into the bottomless chasm.

  4. 4

    Meet the Blue Jay

Descend the stone path towards the monastery cliffs until you encounter a Blue Jay perched on the ledge at (X: -57, Y: -19). Cast Speak with Animals to hear its complaint about Giant Eagles hijacking its nest on the monastery roof. Agree to assist the bird to unlock the objective to reclaim its territory when you scale the monastery later.

Tip: Keep Speak with Animals active so you can converse with both the Blue Jay here and the eagles later to uncover who the nest really belongs to.

Watch out: Walking up to the bird without beast-speech active wastes the interaction and leaves the nest quest unassigned.

  5. 5

    Defeat the Undead Ambush

Backtrack south to the trail fork and advance west down the rocky ravine toward (X: -95, Y: -118). Two Level 5 Death Shepherds will attack alongside a swarm of Ghasts and Ghouls, using reviving magic every turn to resurrect their fallen allies. Focus all radiant and single-target burst damage on the two Death Shepherds first, or have a high-Strength companion pick up the corpses of slain ghouls into their inventory to stop them from being reanimated.

Tip: Cast Silence over the Death Shepherds or drop heavy crowd control like Grease and Ice Storm to prevent them from casting their touch-range resurrection spell.

Watch out: Leaving either Death Shepherd alive while picking off weaker ghouls wastes your spell slots, as the shepherds will continuously revive each other and all nearby minions.

  6. 6

    Confer with Elminster Aumar

Continue westward past the bloodstained defile along the main road. The legendary wizard Elminster Aumar will flag you down, complaining of weary travels and empty rations. Speak with him with Gale in your party to learn Mystra's divine decree, then invite him to your camp for food and rest so he can weave a Netherese stabilization ward onto Gale's chest orb.

Tip: Keep Gale in your active party when speaking to Elminster to gain immediate companion approval and skip extra camp back-and-forth dialogue.

Watch out: If you dismiss Elminster aggressively or avoid talking to him before entering Act 2, you risk delaying Gale's ward and stalling his personal questline.

  7. 7

    Transition to the Shadow-Cursed Lands

Head to the westernmost edge of the map to locate the towering stone archway at (X: -142, Y: -127). Ensure your party is fully rested, stocked with torches or light spells, and geared up before stepping through. Interact with the zone threshold to transition directly into the Ruined Battlefield of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

Tip: Cast Light or equip weapons that emit illumination before stepping through the archway to handle the shadowy curse immediately upon zone-in.

Watch out: Venturing past the archway without completing your visits to Rosymorn Monastery and the crèche leaves valuable relics and substantial experience behind on this trail.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Steal a Githyanki Egg

Talking to Lady Esther along the trail

  • Agree to steal the egg / deliver the real Githyanki egg→ Esther rewards you with gold; in Act 3 the hatched Githyanki youth slaughters Lady Esther and the Society of Brilliance Lodge
  • Trick her with the Owlbear Egg (DC 21 check)→ You receive full payment immediately, the Society of Brilliance survives unharmed in Act 3, and Esther is dismissed by her patrons
  • Refuse the contract or attack Lady Esther→ Quest closes; you keep any eggs found, avoid the Act 3 slaughter, and can loot or permanently lose her unique merchant stock

Most players pick: Trick her with the Owlbear Egg (DC 21 check)

Delivering the real egg leads to the death of several recurring NPCs in Act 3; buy her vendor gear before making her hostile.

Reclaim the Blue Jay's Nest

Speaking with the Blue Jay via Speak with Animals near the monastery overlook

  • Agree to kill the Giant Eagles nesting on the monastery roof→ Unlocks the quest *Reclaim the Blue Jay's Nest*; returning here after killing the eagles causes the Blue Jay to mark a hidden buried dirt mound with minor loot
  • Refuse to help or kill the Blue Jay→ The quest never starts or fails; you miss the marker for the buried chest, though it can still be dug up with a DC 25 Survival check or manual shovel dig

Most players pick: Refuse to help or kill the Blue Jay

The Eagles above are non-hostile if approached carefully, while the Blue Jay is secretly stealing the nest from them.

Meeting Elminster Aumar

Encountering Elminster near the western trail crossing toward the Shadow-Cursed Lands

  • Invite Elminster to your camp→ He rests at camp, stabilizes Gale's Netherese Orb to halt his need to consume magical artifacts, and advances Gale's personal quest with Mystra's divine decree
  • Attack or bypass Elminster→ His construct dissolves upon defeat and grants no unique loot, delaying Gale's stabilization until he appears again at the start of the Shadow-Cursed Lands

Most players pick: Invite Elminster to your camp

Crucial milestone for Gale's survival and companion questline.
