Iron Throne
The Iron Throne is an underwater stronghold used by Enver Gortash to hold Duke Ulder Ravengard, Omeluum, and the families of the Gondian workers hostage. Upon arriving via submersible, Gortash initiates a self-destruct sequence, triggering a strict turn-based escape encounter where you must free as many prisoners as possible before the facility implodes. If you choose to defeat Gortash before visiting, the submarine disappears, the entire facility collapses, and all captives perish automatically.

The short version
What matters
- •Rescuing Duke Ravengard to advance Wyll's companion quest and discover the path to the Wyrmway.
- •Freeing Obelia Toobin and the Gondian families so Zanner Toobin will assist in dismantling the Steel Watch Foundry.
- •Rescuing Omeluum with the Help action to unlock its instant two-character submersible teleport and receive its reward bundle.
- •Grabbing the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen at (X: -45, Y: 17) and the High Security Vault nº6 Key at (X: -48, Y: 98) before the facility floods.
Common mistakes
- •Spending full actions lockpicking holding cells instead of shooting the external wall levers from range.
- •Letting Mizora kill Duke Ravengard upon release; immediately cast Sanctuary, Dimension Door, or pre-emptive healing to survive the spiderling burst.
- •Leaving Omeluum strapped to the table because you assume a wall lever opens its bonds; you must physically stand adjacent and spend an Action to Help it.
- •Assuming all party members must make it up the ladder to succeed; so long as one survivor boards the sub, Withers can resurrect drowned companions at camp.
What you can skip
- •Manually closing bulkhead doors with levers, as doing so wastes actions and often traps fleeing Gondian captives outside.
- •Trying to kill every spawned Sahuagin wave; focus entirely on movement and crowd control.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Docking and the Central Hub
When you climb down the submersible ladder into the central antechamber, turn-based mode engages immediately under a strict timer (8 turns on Explorer, 6 on Balanced, 5 on Tactician or Honour Mode). Pull the wall levers flanking the central chamber to open the two adjacent holding cells and release Obelia Toobin and her fellow Gondian captives. If Omeluum is imprisoned here, it contacts you telepathically at once, urging you to prioritize Duke Ravengard.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Shoot door levers with arrows or damage cantrips to pop cells open from across the room without wasting movement.
Watch out: Do not waste entire actions lockpicking cell doors, as every cell has an external lever that opens it instantly.
-
2
Securing the West Wing
Dash down the western corridor where Sahuagin guards patrol outside two holding cells packed with up to six Gondian prisoners. Flip the levers outside both chambers, clear any intervening raiders, and keep the main corridor clear so the unarmed hostages can sprint freely toward the central ladder.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Drop area-denial spells or summons near the corridor entrance to bottleneck pursuers while the hostages dash away.
Watch out: Gondians have low health and will not fight back, making them easy prey if Sahuagin manage to throw nets or intercept their retreat.
-
3
Evacuating Duke Ravengard in the East Wing
Sprint east into the cellblock guarded by Sahuagin and a Sahuagin Champion to reach Duke Ulder Ravengard's cell. Pull the wall lever to free him; if Wyll broke his pact, Mizora materializes the moment Ravengard steps into the hall, forcing him to his knees and summoning six exploding Combustive Belly Spiderlings. Immediately heal the Duke, cast Sanctuary, or use Dimension Door to extract him before the spiderlings detonate.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Pre-casting Death Ward or throwing a high-tier healing potion at Duke Ravengard before he steps into the hallway keeps him alive through Mizora's ambush.
Watch out: If Duke Ravengard dies during this escape, Wyll's father is permanently dead and his personal questline is severely cut short.

Rescuing the Southern Wing and Omeluum
Send a mobile operative south to use the Help action on Santoria strapped to the central examination table, then push southwest into the flooded laboratory where Omeluum is restrained. Use the Help action to unbuckle Omeluum, then grab the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen sitting on the nearby desk. Activate Omeluum's unique Teleport to Submersible ability to instantly warp both Omeluum and your rescuer directly up into the submarine cockpit.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Omeluum's teleport ability costs no spell slots and takes along an adjacent ally, making whoever reaches him instantly safe.
Watch out: Omeluum cannot be freed by a lever; you must manually reach the operating chair and spend an action to untie it.

5
Scavenging the Northwest Corridor
Direct a fast character north through the flooded corridors toward the secure storage rooms before your turns run out. Locate the locked Opulent Chest sitting in the water at (X: -48, Y: 98), pick the lock to loot the High Security Vault nº6 Key and the Supreme Elixir of Arcane Cultivation, then double back toward the hub.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Use haste, dashes, or teleportation spells like Misty Step to cover the flooded northwest wing without falling behind schedule.
Watch out: If you linger too long looting chests here, rising water and incoming Sahuagin reinforcements will cut off your retreat back to the central shaft.
-
6
Final Evacuation to the Submersible
Guide all surviving party members and escaping prisoners up the ladder into the submersible before the turn counter hits zero. As each Gondian prisoner reaches the ladder, their portrait disappears from the turn tracker to indicate they are safely aboard. Ensure at least one party member climbs up into the cockpit before the facility implodes to secure the escape.
Key fight: The Iron Throne EvacuationTip: Any companion left behind when the timer expires can be revived back at camp by Withers, provided at least one character safely boards the sub.
Watch out: Letting the turn counter reach zero with no party members inside the submersible results in a total party wipe and instant game over.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Dock at the Iron Throne vs. Turn Back
When Gortash contacts your submersible via projection on approach
- Dock anyway→ Gortash arms the prison's self-destruct (initiating a 5–8 turn escape timer), Wyrm's Rock turns permanently hostile, and you gain the chance to rescue the prisoners
- Turn back→ Redhammer returns to the docks, the facility remains sealed, Gortash's pact remains possible, but Duke Ravengard, Omeluum, and all Gondian hostages are left behind to perish or remain captive
Most players pick: Dock anyway
Point of no return: turning back lets you reconsider, but docking triggers an irreversible turn-based countdown and breaks any alliance with Gortash.
Rescue Duke Ulder Ravengard vs. Abandon/Kill Him
In the east wing cells during the escape countdown
- Unlock cell and protect him to the submersible→ Duke Ravengard survives, moves to your camp, reconciles with Wyll, unlocks the Wyrmway/Ansur quest, and rallies Baldur's Gate city forces for the final battle
- Leave him behind or let him die→ Ravengard dies permanently, Wyll is devastated (often adopting the title 'Blade of Avernus' without his father's guidance), and you lose the Duke's direct aid
Most players pick: Protect and extract him to the submersible
If Wyll broke his pact with Mizora, she ambushes Ravengard with explosive spiderlings right outside his cell; you must heal/buff or teleport him to keep him alive.
Free Omeluum vs. Leave It Behind
In the flooded southwest laboratory (only present if the Society of Brilliance was not killed by the hatched Githyanki youth)
- Help unbuckle Omeluum→ Omeluum uses its instant 2-person teleport ability straight to the sub, survives to appear at the Society Lodge, and rewards you with high-tier scrolls/alchemy items
- Leave it strapped down→ Omeluum drowns in the implosion, permanently ending its merchant stock and Society storyline
Most players pick: Unbuckle Omeluum
Omeluum can instantly teleport whoever helps it directly back to safety, making it a zero-turn net-loss rescue.
Save Gondian Hostages (Obelia Toobin and others) vs. Leave Them
In the central, west, and south cells
- Pull wall levers / unbuckle prisoners and cover their retreat→ Surviving Gondians board the sub; at the Steel Watch Foundry, Zanner Toobin and the enslaved Gondians rebel against the Banites and aid in destroying the Foundry
- Let them drown / die to Sahuagin→ Gondians perish; Zanner Toobin falls into despair upon hearing his family died, requiring difficult dialogue checks or forcing you to destroy the Foundry without full Gondian cooperation
Most players pick: Pull all levers to free as many as possible
Levers can be triggered from afar using ranged attacks, arrows, or cantrips.

Key fights
Enemies: Sahuagin, Sahuagin Hunters, and Sahuagin Champions (alongside Mizora's Combustive Spiders if rescuing Duke Ravengard)
Threats: Multiattack, Blood Frenzy (advantage on melee attacks against injured targets), Net (Ensnared condition disabling movement), and exploding fire damage from Combustive Spiders
Weaknesses and resistances: Vulnerable to Cold damage; susceptible to heavy crowd control (Hypnotic Pattern, Confusion) and physical barriers (closed watertight doors); weak to single-target burst
Tactics: Split the party down all corridors immediately using high mobility (Potion of Speed, Haste, Longstrider, Misty Step, Transposition Arrows); shoot cell levers at range; secure Duke Ravengard with Sanctuary or Dimension Door before the spiders detonate; leave a rear guard at the central submersible ladder/chokepoint or use Arcane Lock/lever pulls to seal corridor bulkheads against infinitely spawnin
Rewards: Survival of Duke Ulder Ravengard, Omeluum, and the Gondian hostages (unlocking Gondian ally support against the Steel Watch), Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, and loot from the submersible safe/Security Room.
Enemies
Spawns in along with regular sahuagin reinforcements to harass escaping prisoners and lock down hallways.
Tips
- Prioritize rescuing Omeluum in the southwest corner early, as his innate ability allows him to instantly teleport himself and one allied companion straight back into the submarine regardless of remaining movement.
