Selûnite Outpost
The Selûnite Outpost serves as a primary southern gateway into the Underdark directly below the Defiled Temple. Players must bypass or disable automated defenses powered by a glowing moonstone before venturing out into the wider caverns. While here, adventurers can scavenge supplies, collect clues concerning the Nightsong, and unlock a regional waypoint.

The short version
What matters
- •Shoot the Moonstone atop the central Selûne statue with any ranged attack to permanently disable the lethal radiant gate turrets before exiting.
- •Loot the skeleton on the upper battlement (X: 153, Y: -222) for the Selûnite Key, which opens the locked armory door on the outpost's lower level.
- •Reveal the hidden wall at (X: 176, Y: -247) and disarm the booby-trapped Opulent Chest to obtain the build-defining Luminous Armour.
- •Unlock the Gilded Chest inside the armory room (X: 163, Y: -248) to claim the Helmet of Smiting for your Paladin or melee smite builds.
Common mistakes
- •Walking through the main gate while the Moonstone is intact. The automated defensive statues deal massive radiant damage per turn; shoot the central Moonstone gem first to disable them.
- •Rushing to open the Opulent Chest in the hidden vault without disarming it. The chest is wired to nearby explosive barrels and will detonate your party if opened without passing a DC 10 Sleight of Hand trap check.
- •Leaping blindly out of the broken northwestern window without scouting or resting. This drops your party directly toward the Spectator boss fight while potentially suffering fall damage.
What you can skip
- •Maneuvering a Sussur Blossom up to the central statue to silence the Moonstone; shooting the gem from the floor with an arrow achieves the same result instantly without carrying anti-magic flowers.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Arrive at the Outpost and Unlock the Waypoint
When you climb down the wooden ladder from the Defiled Temple into the outpost's main hall, immediately touch the Ancient Sigil Circle on your right to unlock the Underdark – Selûnite Outpost Waypoint (X: 180, Y: -235). Look across the courtyard to take note of the colossal central statue of Selûne holding a glowing Moonstone aloft. Before rushing down the steps, explore the hall and ready your lockpicking kit for the side rooms.
Tip: Loot the nearby bookshelves and skeletons for lore scrolls and camp supplies before moving further into the courtyard.
-
2
Ascend the Ramparts for the Selûnite Key
Head north across the main floor toward the closed portcullis, but turn toward the wooden ladder leading up to the defensive battlement above the entrance (X: 153, Y: -222). Climb to the upper walkway and search the skeletal remains slumped against the rampart to pick up the Selûnite Key. While you are up here, observe the twin defensive statues flanking the gate below, which are actively channeling radiant laser beams from the central Moonstone.
Tip: The Selûnite Key spares you from burning Thieves' Tools on the heavy iron gate of the eastern storage armory below.
-
3
Unlock the Storage Room and Gilded Chest
Descend the ladder and head into the storage area enclosed by iron bars on the western side of the hall (X: 163, Y: -248). Use the Selûnite Key or pick the lock (DC 20) on the iron gate, then locate the locked Gilded Chest sitting among the crates. Pass a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to crack the chest open and retrieve the Helmet of Smiting.
Tip: Keep a character with high Wisdom nearby in this room to ensure you trigger the passive check needed for the adjacent secret door.
-
4
Uncover the Secret Vault and Luminous Armour
In that same storage room, walk right up to the back stone wall (X: 176, Y: -247) to trigger a DC 15 Perception check that reveals a hidden sliding door. Step through into the concealed alcove, where you will find an Opulent Chest surrounded by explosive barrels. Use a Trap Disarm Toolkit to disable the tripwire (DC 10 Sleight of Hand) before picking the lock (DC 15 Sleight of Hand) to claim the Luminous Armour without igniting the room.
Tip: Ungroup your party and send in a single rogue to disarm and loot the chest so companions do not inadvertently set off the tripwire.
Watch out: Failing to disarm the Opulent Chest's trap will detonate the adjacent barrels, dealing catastrophic fire damage to your party and potentially destroying nearby loose loot.
-
5
Handle the Moonstone Defense and the Minotaur
Approach the main gate to trigger a scripted scene where an enraged Minotaur charges toward the entrance from the outside caverns. If you leave the Moonstone intact, the twin defensive statues will incinerate the beast with radiant blasts in seconds, though stepping outside yourself will turn those same lethal lasers on your party. To ensure safe passage, shoot the Moonstone atop Selûne's staff with an arrow or ranged spell to break it and permanently shut off the defense grid, fighting the Minotaur yourself if it is still alive.
Tip: If you want combat XP for the Minotaur, destroy the Moonstone before it dies so your party lands the killing blows instead of the automated turrets.
Watch out: Stepping past the portcullis into the courtyard perimeter while the Moonstone remains intact will cause the statues to fire devastating radiant beams that can wipe your party in a single turn.

Choose Your Exit into the Underdark
With the outpost cleared and looted, choose your route into the wider Underdark. You can pull the iron lever beside the front portcullis to walk down the main trail into the cavern hills, slip through a cracked wall crevice using small races or Disguise Self, or jump through the high broken barred windows on the northwestern wall to overlook the western petrified ravine. Be aware that dropping out through the western windows places you right at the edge of the petrified drow field, triggering a lethal ambush.
Key fight: Spectator Ambush at the Petrified BattlefieldTip: Cast Feather Fall before leaping through the high northwestern windows to avoid heavy fall damage on the rocks below.
Watch out: Do not drop out of the western windows unprepared: landing in the chasm immediately triggers the Spectator Ambush at the Petrified Battlefield against Dhourn and his charmed drow.
