← All areas in this guide

Located on the western shore of the Lower City, this facility serves as the manufacturing base for Lord Gortash's mechanical sentries. Players infiltrate the compound to disable or completely blow up the production line, severely weakening Gortash's control. The short version

What matters

  • •Defeating the Steel Watcher Titan rewards the legendary longbow Gontr Mael, along with Enriched Infernal Iron.
  • •Assembling the Hellfire Engine Crossbow at the workbench on the main floor yields one of the strongest ranged weapons in the game before the facility is leveled.
  • •Overloading the Neurocitor permanently disables every Steel Watcher throughout Baldur's Gate, making the eventual showdown with Lord Gortash substantially easier.

Common mistakes

  • •Entering the Foundry and detonating the Neurocitor before visiting the Iron Throne will immediately cause the submersible prison to be scuttled, killing all Gondian hostages and Duke Ravengard off-screen.
  • •Ignoring dropped Motivators during combat will allow the devices to activate and detonate the collars on the enslaved Gondians, instantly wiping them out.
  • •Triggering the self-destruct console before looting the Titan's remains will permanently destroy Gontr Mael under the collapsing rubble.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Infiltrate the Main Floor and Meet Zanner Toobin

When you slip inside the ground floor through the security doors, vents, or crane lift, you interrupt Black Gauntlet Tamia Holzt threatening the enslaved Gondians with a Motivator device. Defeat the Banite guards, making sure to interact with any dropped Motivator within one turn and pass a DC 5 Intelligence check to disable it before the workers' collars explode. Loot the Security Office Key from Tamia Holzt's body (or lockpick the door) to speak with Zanner Toobin, who agrees to help take down the foundry once you rescue the Gondian hostages from the Iron Throne.

Tip: Lightning damage deals double damage against any Steel Watchers patrolling the floor, and you can grab the components to forge a heavy crossbow while searching the workstations.

Watch out: If you fail to deactivate dropped Motivators within one round during combat, every enslaved Gondian on the floor will immediately die.

  2. 2

Descend into the Subterranean Lab Floor

Use your key to descend the stairs or elevator into the subterranean assembly level, where Banite overseers led by Hahns Rives enforce the mass assembly of Steel Watcher chassis. Join the Gondians in clearing out the guards and Hellfire Watchers, again disarming any Motivator dropped during the clash before the kill-switch triggers. Search the surgery tables and surrounding bookcases to uncover the horrific brain-harvesting process behind the Watchers, and read the research texts scattered around the workstations.

Tip: Area-of-effect spells such as Otiluke's Freezing Sphere or Chain Lightning clear the clusters of Banite overseers quickly, but be cautious not to catch the allied Gondian workers in the blast radius.

Watch out: The book The Many Faces of Gond can be incinerated or destroyed by stray area-of-effect spells during the battle, permanently destroying the written shut-off code if Zanner dies later.

  3. 3

    Destroy the Steel Watcher Titan

Open the master blast doors to confront the towering Steel Watcher Titan and its three Hellfire Watcher escorts in the foundry's inner sanctum. Focus down the three Hellfire Watchers first using concentrated lightning spells and bludgeoning damage while spreading out your party to avoid the Titan's hellfire artillery barrages. When the Titan hunkers into its Bulwark Form, strip away its temporary shields with lightning attacks to finish it off, and loot Gontr Mael along with Enriched Infernal Iron directly from its shattered chassis before touching anything else.

    Key fight: Steel Watcher Titan

Tip: The Titan becomes especially vulnerable to lightning damage during its defensive mode; twin-casting high-level Chain Lightning or hurling water followed by lightning can demolish it in a couple of turns.

Watch out: The legendary longbow Gontr Mael will not drop if the Titan dies strictly from the "Atrophied" condition, and all loot becomes permanently lost if you trigger the console before picking it up.

  4. 4

Overload the Neurocitor and Escape the Foundry

Interact with the Neurocitor switchboard at the back of the chamber and initiate the foundry's self-destruction by using Wulbren's Runepowder Bomb, having Zanner Toobin punch in the manual protocol, or inputting the codeword "Nebelun". Once the sequence activates, flee the facility into the yard as the entire structure detonates, which instantly deactivates every Steel Watcher across all of Baldur's Gate. Outside the burning ruins, resolve the standoff between the surviving Gondians, Barcus Wroot, and Wulbren Bongle by persuading Barcus to overthrow Wulbren or defying the Ironhand zealots.

Tip: Persuading Barcus to stand up to Wulbren successfully recruits both the Ironhand Gnomes and the Gondians to your Gather Your Allies roster.

Watch out: Detonating the Neurocitor permanently seals and destroys the foundry interior, locking out any unlooted items and uncrafted equipment inside forever.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Zanner Toobin's proposal

Speaking to Zanner in the Security Office

  • Agree to rescue his family and the hostages from the Iron Throne→ He promises to help you sabotage the foundry; you must travel to Flymm Cargo/Iron Throne before advancing
  • Refuse or force the assault immediately→ Gondians in the lower levels fight under duress and cannot be saved peacefully

Most players pick: Agree to rescue the hostages at the Iron Throne

Traveling to the Iron Throne to save the Gondians permanently breaks any non-aggression pact made with Enver Gortash.

Triggering the Neurocitor self-destruct

After defeating the Steel Watcher Titan at the Neural Switchboard

  • Have Zanner Toobin input the sequence→ Destroys the foundry without using items or skill checks
  • Plant Wulbren's Runepowder Bomb→ Consumes the bomb and destroys the foundry (breaks Paladin Oath of Devotion)
  • Enter the true name "Nebelun" via a DC 7 Intelligence check after reading *The Many Faces of Gond*→ Destroys the foundry if Toobin died

Most players pick: Have Zanner Toobin trigger the sequence

Point of no return: destroying the Neurocitor permanently collapses the foundry, locking out all unlooted items and the Hellfire Engine Crossbow crafting station.

Wulbren vs. Gondians showdown

Outside the destroyed foundry docks

  • Side with Wulbren to execute the Gondians→ Gondians die; Wulbren's Ironhands join Gather Your Allies
  • Convince Barcus Wroot to denounce and overthrow Wulbren→ Barcus peacefully takes leadership of Clan Ironhand, exiles Wulbren, and secures both the Gondians and Ironhands for Gather Your Allies
  • Defend Gondians without Barcus (intimidate/kill Wulbren)→ Gondians survive; Wulbren leaves furious or dies, forfeiting Ironhand support

Most players pick: Back Barcus Wroot to take over Clan Ironhand

Requires keeping Barcus alive throughout Acts 1 and 2 to achieve the optimal double-ally outcome.

Steel Watcher Titan

Enemies: Steel Watcher Titan and three Hellfire Watchers

Threats: Steel Watcher Titan uses Defensive Protocol: Bulwark (gains massive temporary hit points and prepares an explosive retaliation), Launch Protocol: Bola, Hellfire Curse, Multiattack, and Legendary Actions/Immunity to incapacitation, while Hellfire Watchers deal high fire/slashing damage and trigger self-destruct blasts upon fatal damage

Weaknesses and resistances: Immune to poison and psychic; resistant to slashing, piercing, bludgeoning, necrotic, and radiant; vulnerable to lightning damage

Tactics: Hold the raised entrance walkway/steps as high ground and a chokepoint, apply lightning spells (e.g., Chain Lightning, Witch Bolt) combined with Create Water for double damage, focus down the Hellfire Watchers first before they surround the party, push or step away before fatal self-destruct explosions, and burst down the Titan's Bulwark temporary HP shield before it unleashes explosive counter-vo

Rewards: Gontr Mael (Legendary Longbow), Watcher Guide, and access to the Neurocitor control panel to permanently disable all Steel Watchers

Enemies

Steel Watcher Titan
Weak to LightningSteal / drop Gontr Mael

Serves as the factory's final boss and commands the smaller Hellfire Watchers guarding the Control Center.

Hellfire Watcher
Weak to Lightning

An upgraded variant of the standard construct that triggers a lethal self-detonation upon reaching critical health.

Tips

  • Banite overseers drop detonation devices known as motivators when defeated; interact with them within one turn to prevent them from detonating Gondian slave collars.
