Whispering Depths
This cavern network directly beneath the Blighted Village serves as a nest for phase spiders and ettercaps. Adventurers explore the dark tunnels to eliminate the subterranean threats and retrieve key relics, such as the gem needed for the Necromancy of Thay. The deepest chamber houses a massive chasm that can serve as an entrance to the Underdark.

The short version
What matters
- •The Spiderstep Boots grant full immunity to the Enwebbed condition and web surface penalties.
- •Burning web bridges deals massive fall damage to the Phase Spider Matriarch, turning a deadly fight into a trivial one.
- •Jumping into the central chasm with Feather Fall provides a direct shortcut into the Underdark.
Common mistakes
- •Walking across web strands while exploring, which alerts enemies with vibrations and leaves characters Enwebbed.
- •Leaping down the central chasm without Feather Fall active, which causes lethal fall damage to the jumper (and a party wipe if all jump).
- •Letting the Matriarch hatch any egg sacs if you are aiming to unlock the "Pest Control" achievement.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

1
Infiltrate the Upper Caverns
When you enter the depths from the Blighted Village—either by descending the central well rope or breaking through the cracked cellar wall in the forge—crouch into stealth immediately to assess the upper tunnels. Advance carefully through the initial passage while keeping off the web bridges, as walking across them sends vibration pulses that can alert nesting monstrosities ahead. Before leaving the entry ledge, scan the shadows for lurking Ettercaps and Phase Spiders prowling the nearby caverns.
Tip: Sneak along the rock edges to bypass the webs entirely and avoid triggering early ambushes.
Watch out: Stepping onto webs triggers an Enwebbed saving throw and alerts nearby predators via seismic vibrations.
-
2
Raid the Arachnomancer's Shelter
Take the first side tunnel branching west from the well entry point to discover an abandoned, web-draped research alcove at X: -514, Y: -411. Search the desk and containers in this study to gather useful spell scrolls, then unlock the Heavy Chest sitting along the rock wall. Equip your scout with the footwear inside before returning to the main tunnel, as it makes traversing the nest significantly safer.
Tip: Put the Spiderstep Boots on your primary scout so they can sprint across web bridges without triggering Enwebbed.
-
3
Clear the Prowlers and Inspect the Skeleton
Sneak into the central cavern tunnel to surprise and eliminate the two Ettercaps and two Phase Spiders patrolling the rocky walkways. Once the area is quiet, climb the stone ledge at X: -495, Y: -365 to locate a solitary skeleton holding an Apprentice's Pack. Loot the remains to secure a magical ring and an informative diary before plotting your approach to the massive central nest.
Tip: Focus down the Ettercaps first to prevent them from locking down your frontline with ranged web attacks.

tip: Burning a web bridge while the Matriarch stands on it sends her crashing down for 40–50+ fall damage.

Watch out: Pushing the Matriarch into the bottomless pit can glitch her corpse and loot out of reach until much later in the Underdark.

Claim the Dark Amethyst and Discover the Sigil
Head to the western rock ledge at X: -584, Y: -384 to activate the Whispering Depths Ancient Sigil waypoint for quick fast travel. From there, drop down to the lower level at the base of the central stone ridge (X: -565, Y: -355) and pick up the glowing purple Dark Amethyst resting amid the bones. Keep this gemstone safely stored in your inventory so you can unseal the forbidden tome found elsewhere beneath the village.
Tip: You can use Invisibility to snatch the Dark Amethyst without fighting the Matriarch if your party is low-level.
Watch out: Do not sell or discard the Dark Amethyst; it is the unique socket gem required to unlock the Necromancy of Thay.

Plunge Down the Glowing Chasm
Approach the edge of the gaping, green-glowing chasm in the center of the Matriarch's chamber. Gather your entire party together and cast Feather Fall so everyone is safely enchanted, then leap directly over the precipice into the abyss. Enjoy the descent as you touch down safely in the Underdark near the Minotaur Hills to open a whole new underground frontier.
Tip: Group your party tightly before casting Feather Fall to ensure every companion receives the buff from a single spell slot.
Watch out: Leaping into the glowing chasm without Feather Fall active results in an immediate, unavoidable total party wipe.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Descending the Central Glowing Chasm
Standing near the glowing green pit in the Matriarch's chamber
- Cast Feather Fall and jump down→ Plays a cutscene safely landing the party in the Underdark (near the Minotaur Hills) and updates *Travel through the Underdark*
- Jump down without Feather Fall→ All jumping party members suffer lethal fall damage and die, triggering a Game Over cutscene if the whole party jumps
Most players pick: Cast Feather Fall and jump down
Jumping down into the Underdark triggers a sub-region transition, but you can fast-travel back via Waypoints at any time.

Key fights
Enemies: Phase Spider Matriarch, 2 Phase Spiders, and clusters of Phase Spiderlings hatched from egg sacs
Threats: Phase Spider Matriarch uses Ethereal Jaunt (bonus action teleportation), Toxic Spit (ranged AoE poison damage with acidic pools), Spider Queen's Wrath (enrage buff at 50% HP increasing Strength while reducing AC), and summons/hatches swarms of Phase Spiderlings from egg nests; all phase spiders inflict Enwebbed and poison damage on bite attacks
Weaknesses and resistances: Immune to Poison damage and cannot be Enwebbed; egg clusters have low HP and are highly vulnerable to fire or ranged attacks; vulnerable to fall damage and falling into the Underdark chasm
Tactics: Position stealth ranged attackers on high-ground limestone ledges; use stealth/AoE spells (Fire Bolt, arrows) to destroy egg nests before the fight begins; burn or shoot the web bridges beneath the Matriarch while she stands on them to drop her for massive bludgeoning fall damage (or blast her into the central chasm)
Rewards: Poisoner's Robe, Dark Amethyst (found nearby under her web nest, required to unlock the *Necromancy of Thay*), and access to the Underdark chasm.
Enemies
Can teleport across web bridges, summons clutches of spiderlings, and can be sent plummeting for heavy fall damage by burning the webbing beneath her.
Teleporting arachnids that shoot venom and alert other enemies if webs vibrate.
Aberrant spider-herders that attack with claws and webs in melee range.
Fragile hatchlings that emerge in clusters from egg clutches during the matriarch fight.
Tips
- Use fire spells or fire arrows to burn the web bridges whenever the Phase Spider Matriarch stands on them to inflict massive fall damage.
- Destroy the unhatched spider egg sacs from stealth before engaging the matriarch to prevent her from summoning reinforcements.
