The Waning Moon
This abandoned tavern and distillery in Reithwin Town is run by the corrupted undead brewer Thisobald Thorm. Players can either engage him in direct combat or peacefully outdrink and entertain him with stories until his swollen body ruptures. Dealing with the brewer allows safe access to his private laboratory and hidden lore regarding the local resistance and Ketheric Thorm.

The short version
What matters
- •Defeating Thisobald Thorm via the drinking game awards full encounter XP without expending resources and reveals lore about Ketheric's relic.
- •Madeline's Ledger under the counter floorboards is required to complete the "Punish the Wicked" quest.
- •The Punch-Drunk Bastard greatclub and Ichorous Gloves in the back laboratory.
Common mistakes
- •Overlooking Thisobald's fleshy remains after he bursts from overdrinking, leaving the Worn Key behind.
- •Entering the Shadowfell pool later in Act 2 before finding Madeline's Ledger here, permanently locking out the "Punish the Wicked" quest.
What you can skip
- •Engaging Thisobald in direct combat, which wastes party resources and turns all surrounding blighted patrons hostile.

1
Survey the Tavern and Grab the Rat Bat
As you step inside the central taproom of The Waning Moon, you will see the bloated brewer Thisobald Thorm sloshing behind the counter surrounded by docile Blighted patrons. Before drawing close enough to trigger dialogue with him, inspect the main bar wall near the front counter at X: -224, Y: -78 to pick up the Rat Bat. You can also loot a chest sitting in the main hall at X: -208, Y: -90 for a Potion of Angelic Slumber.
Tip: The surrounding Blighted patrons will remain neutral until you trigger open combat with Thisobald.

2
Outdrink or Battle Thisobald Thorm
Walk up to the bar counter to trigger a conversation where Thisobald offers you his lethal distillation across three consecutive rounds. You can outwit him by surviving three Constitution saving throws (DC 14, 16, and 18) or by passing DC 18 Sleight of Hand checks to fake drinking, followed each time by a successful DC 16 Performance check (or DC 18 Deception backup) to tell him tales until he drinks himself to bursting. If you refuse to drink or fail multiple checks, he and his patrons attack in a protracted fight where he gains resistances to the damage types you inflict until he reaches a bloated, vulnerable Hungover state.
Key fight: Thisobald ThormTip: Drinking him to death grants full combat XP, provides key lore revealing Ketheric Thorm's secret relic, and spares your party from spending valuable spell slots.
Watch out: If you trigger combat, Thisobald's damage-absorbing brew makes him resistant to the damage types you attack him with until he enters his Hungover phase, so diversify your party's attack types.

3
Search the Remains and Counter Floorboards
Once Thisobald bursts or falls, approach his remains behind the counter and loot the Worn Key from his gore. While behind the bar counter, pass an automatic DC 10 Perception check to reveal a set of loose floorboards at X: -225, Y: -73. Pry the floorboards open to recover Madeline's Ledger, a vital quest item detailing her past betrayals.
Tip: Because Thisobald ruptures into scattered viscera upon losing the drinking game, make sure to mouse over the flesh puddle to locate his Worn Key and drops.
Watch out: Do not leave Madeline's Ledger behind or delay returning it, as progressing past the Shadowfell point of no return later in the act permanently locks you out of completing He Who Was's quest.

Enter the Private Laboratory and Decode the Research
Head to the back of the tavern and use the Worn Key to unlock the heavy metal door leading into the cavernous distillery laboratory. Approach the cluttered workbench inside and read Thisobald's Research Notes, passing a DC 14 Investigation check to decipher his scribbled formula. Deciphering the text teaches your party the recipe to brew Purple Worm Toxin.
Tip: Passing the Investigation check on the notes automatically flags the dig mound on your map, bypassing the need to roll a steep Perception check outdoors.

Dealing with Thisobald Thorm
When speaking to Thisobald at the bar
- Drink/feign drinking and pass storytelling checks→ Thisobald bursts and dies peacefully, gives full combat XP, reveals the secret of Ketheric's invulnerability, avoids fighting the blighted patrons, and grants the Worn Key
- Refuse to drink, attack directly, or fail any check (unless salvaging a failed story check with a subsequent Deception c→ Triggers combat against Thisobald and all blighted undead patrons, yields identical corpse loot without lore details
Most players pick: Drink/feign drinking and pass checks
Karlach and Astarion approve of tricking him into drinking himself to death.

Key fights
Enemies: Thisobald Thorm, Blighted Patrons (x2), Blighted Barman, and Blighted Troubador
Threats: Thisobald uses Roaring Belch (AoE damage matching his current brew), Gaseous Reflux, Potent Brew, and has the Numb condition which grants complete immunity to Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning, and Thunder damage; he absorbs elements to unleash breath attacks and mephits, while the Blighted undead swarm and support him
Weaknesses and resistances: Weakness: Blacked Out condition (after consuming enough brew / regurgitating, he becomes vulnerable to all damage types, including physical weapons); takes standard damage from Acid, Cold, Fire, Force, Lightning, Necrotic, Poison, and Radiant
Tactics: High ground and ranged positioning on the upper walkways/balconies outside his vomit cone; hit him with a single elemental damage type (e.g. Fire or Acid) to force him to drink until he gains the "Blacked Out" status, then focus him down with physical burst damage while picking off the fragile undead adds with AoE spells; alternatively, bypass combat entirely by beating successive Constitution/Sle
Rewards: Worn Key (unlocking the distillery backroom with the Punch-Drunk Bastard greatclub and Madeline's Ledger), various camp supply drinks, brewer alchemy ingredients, and 300+ XP.
Enemies
Boss who absorbs elemental damage from drinks and can be defeated without combat by passing multiple drink-handling and story checks.
Hostile undead bar patrons that assist Thisobald Thorm if an open brawl begins.
Wandering shadow-cursed distillery worker that joins combat alongside the master brewer.
Undead tavern entertainer found on site that turns hostile during combat.
Tips
- Use a character with strong Constitution saving throws or high Sleight of Hand and Performance proficiencies to defeat Thisobald Thorm entirely through conversation.
