Temple of Bhaal

Baldur's Gate 3 guide · The inner sanctum of the Bhaalist cult ✓ Checked against sources
← All areas in this guide

Situated deep beneath the Lower City within the Undercity Ruins, this cavernous sanctuary serves as the hidden stronghold for the Cult of Bhaal. Players enter the temple to confront Orin the Red, recover her Netherstone, and rescue an abducted companion held hostage upon the blood-soaked central altar. The location also acts as the narrative climax for the Dark Urge origin character, who must face Orin in a duel for Bhaal's favor.

The short version

What matters

  • •Defeating Orin to reclaim her Netherstone, Crimson Mischief, and Bloodthirst.
  • •Freeing your kidnapped companion or camp follower from the Altar of Bhaal.
  • •Speaking with Helena Anchev's corpse in the Chosen's Room to dismantle Orin's composure before the fight.
  • •Resolving the Dark Urge's personal destiny with Bhaal and Withers.

Common mistakes

  • •Knocking or blasting Orin off the arena edge into the abyss, which permanently forfeits Crimson Mischief and her unique armor (though her Netherstone dagger respawns on the platform).
  • •Confronting Orin without Gortash's Netherstone or without Helena's secret, leading to a failed DC 25 check that gets your kidnapped companion executed immediately.
  • •Forgetting to bring multi-hit abilities (*Magic Missile*, *Scorching Ray*, Arrow of Many Targets) on standard runs, leaving Orin practically invulnerable behind her Unstoppable stacks.

What you can skip

  • •Fighting Orin with high-damage, single-hit attacks while her Unstoppable shield stacks are still intact.
  • •Attempting to bruteforce the hostage's altar chains with physical weapon strikes instead of using the key, lockpicking (DC 25 Sleight of Hand), or *Knock*.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Crossing the Trapped Bridge to the Solid Doors

From the Temple of Bhaal waypoint, head east across the stone bridge toward the entrance, carefully disarming or jumping past the Marble Plates and Sanguine Vents embedded in the flagstones before candles ignite the unstable blood. Once across the chasm, present the Amulet of Bhaal (or let Sceleritas Fel open it if playing as the Dark Urge) to unlock the Solid Doors and step inside beneath the bloodstained archway to reach the upper perch and lending library overlooking the central amphitheater.

Tip: Split your party and send a single high-Perception rogue ahead to clear the bridge traps safely.

Watch out: Crossing recklessly can trigger chain explosions that blast party members into the surrounding chasm for an instant game over.

  2. 2

Scouting the Upper Perch and the Secret Path

When you survey the upper balcony, inspect the book stacks in the lending library to find *The Ecstasy of Murder* and search the nearby alcove holding the skeleton of Manip Antyra Thorpe. Then slip along the northern rocks toward the crag at X: 75, Y: 1032 rather than descending the main stairs toward the altar. Take this concealed path to bypass the cultists' sightlines entirely and infiltrate Orin's private chambers before confronting her.

Tip: Use Invisibility or high Stealth here to explore the perimeter without alerting the sanctuary chanters below.

  3. 3

    Infiltrating the Chosen's Room

When you slip into the private quarters at X: 96, Y: 991, inspect the preserved corpse of Helena Anchev displayed in the case behind the desk and cast Speak with Dead on her to uncover Sarevok's plot to have her murder Orin. Search Orin's desk at X: 96, Y: 997 to pocket Orin's Chest Key alongside *Manifesto: 13 Uktar 1482*, then open the nearby wooden chest for rare coatings and grab Sceleritas Fel's letter from the vase. If you are playing a standard Tav, note the murdered white dragonborn corpse of the fallen Dark Urge resting in the ritual circle beside the bed before you return to the arena.

Tip: Casting Speak with Dead on Helena gives you the vital dialogue leverage needed to unnerve Orin without fighting through her hostage bluff.

Watch out: If you trigger the boss fight before discovering Helena's secret, you forfeit the easiest non-combat route to rattle Orin and protect the hostage.

  4. 4

    Confronting Orin at the Altar

When you descend to the central platform at X: 59, Y: 1007, approach Orin where your abducted companion (or Yenna) lies chained upon the Altar of Bhaal. If you killed Gortash, present his Netherstone to honor her terms, or pass a DC 25 dialogue check—or reveal Helena's dark secret—to divert her bloodlust away from the hostage and trigger her Slayer transformation. As a standard protagonist, shatter the chanters' Sanctuary or burn through Orin's Unstoppable stacks to slay her; if playing as the Dark Urge, face her in an isolated 1v1 duel for the Lord of Murder's favor.

Tip: Multi-hit spells like *Magic Missile* or *Upcasted Scorching Ray* strip Orin's Unstoppable charges instantly so your heavy hitters can deal full damage.

Watch out: Shoving, blasting, or using *Thunderwave* on Orin into the surrounding chasm can destroy or permanently strand her unique legendary weapons out of reach.

  5. 5

Rescuing the Hostage and Resolving the Mantle

When Orin collapses, pick up the Netherstone-Pommelled Bloodthirst from her corpse, which separates into Bloodthirst and Orin's Netherstone, alongside Crimson Mischief, the Mutilated Carapace, and the Altar Key. Use the Altar Key, a DC 25 Sleight of Hand check, or the *Knock* spell to unlock the altar chains and free your surviving companion. If you are the Dark Urge, conclude your audience with Bhaal by either accepting his bloody crown or defying him to be slain and subsequently resurrected by Withers, cleansed of the Urge forever.

Tip: If you lack Sleight of Hand proficiencies or miss the key on Orin's remains, a simple level 2 *Knock* spell instantly frees the prisoner from the altar.

Watch out: Accepting Bhaal's mantle as the Dark Urge permanently alienates Jaheira and Minsc, turning them into sworn enemies who will fight you to the death.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Fate of the Chained Hostage

When confronting Orin at the central altar

  • Pass a DC 25 dialogue check (or reveal Helena Anchev's matricidal secret)→ Orin spares the hostage and attacks the party, allowing the victim to be freed and returned to camp
  • Fail the checks or provoke Orin without killing Gortash→ Orin slits the hostage's throat, permanently killing the abducted companion (or Yenna)

Most players pick: Pass the dialogue check or use Helena's secret

If the hostage is left chained to the altar when leaving the temple after combat, they die automatically.

Dark Urge Duel Format

When initiating combat as the Dark Urge origin

  • Accept the 1v1 duel alone→ A duel without cultist Sanctuary buffs; winning qualifies you for Bhaal’s blessing or redemption
  • Decline the duel, attack via a companion, or have party members interfere→ Orin instantly executes the hostage, cultists join combat, and Bhaal permanently curses the Dark Urge as a failure

Most players pick: Accept the 1v1 duel alone

Losing or breaking duel rules permanently locks out the redemption ending and guarantees a bad epilogue.

Dark Urge: Bhaal's Chosen vs. Redemption

After defeating Orin in the duel as the Dark Urge

  • Accept Bhaal's mantle→ Become Chosen of Bhaal, gain/keep the Slayer Form, and unlock the evil ending to enslave the brain for Bhaal; Jaheira and Minsc will permanently abandon or turn hostile later
  • Reject Bhaal→ Bhaal violently drains your divine essence, killing you; Withers resurrects you as a mortal, permanently curing the Dark Urge (losing Slayer form)

Most players pick: Reject Bhaal (for good/redemption runs) or Accept Bhaal (for evil runs)

This is the final point of no return defining the Dark Urge's fate and epilogue track.

Tips

  • Strip Orin's Unstoppable barrier by utilizing multi-hit abilities like Magic Missile or Upcast Scorching Ray, or defeat the surrounding sanctuary-shielded cultists chanting around the perimeter so her protection stops refreshing each turn.
