Sewers
The Lower City Sewers form an expansive underground labyrinth in Act Three connecting key districts, the Guildhall, and the Undercity Ruins. While navigating its filth-coated channels, the party hunts down the Stone Lord, navigates Bhaalist ambushes, and seeks paths toward the Temple of Bhaal or Cazador's domain. Exploration involves solving drainage puzzles, dealing with paranoid thieves, and discovering hidden routes beneath Baldur's Gate.

The short version
What matters
- •Knocking Minsc out with non-lethal melee strikes and shielding his mind recruits both him and Boo while securing Jaheira's permanent loyalty .
- •Opening the Abandoned Cistern Sluice Gate by balancing the water and heat gauges grants access to the Stone Lord confrontation and the Guildhall back entrance .
- •Defeating Aelis Siryasius yields the Cindermoth Cloak, and placing Sarin's Skull onto her skeleton earns Chancer's Carcanet .
- •Presenting the Orphic Hammer to Kith'rak Voss in his sewer hideout grants the legendary Silver Sword of the Astral Plane .
Common mistakes
- •Knocking out Minsc with a ranged attack, spell, or while a damage-over-time condition (such as Bleeding or Burning) is active will accidentally kill him, causing Jaheira to permanently leave or attack you .
- •Casting *Dominate Person* on Roah Moonglow during the Cistern fight will cause the game to softlock or trigger hostile combat when the post-fight cutscene with Minsc begins .
- •Attempting to enter the hidden passage near the sewage raft dock from the sewer side is impossible, as the stone door cannot be lockpicked or broken from outside and must first be opened via a lever near Nine-Fingers' vault.
What you can skip
- •You do not need to wake Dairow Vin at X: -155 Y: 846, as he is afflicted with Impenetrable Slumber and cannot be normally awoken or spoken to.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Surface descents and eastern tunnels
After climbing down any sewer grate, latrine chute, or basement tunnel into the Lower City Sewers, travel toward the eastern corridors around coordinates X: -22 Y: 805 where displaced refugees shelter near toxic vents. Interact with the lever at X: -35 Y: 805 to shut off the gas, or remain on guard if Orin was not triggered during camp rests, as she will ambush you disguised as an abducted companion along these junctions. Head west along the main drainage aqueduct until you discover the central City Sewers Waypoint at coordinates X: -98 Y: 779.
Tip: Jump or cast *Fly* over the granitic rocks by the refugee camp to bypass the fume vents entirely before pulling the shutoff lever.
Watch out: If Orin initiates her sewer kidnapping scene here, do not attack her recklessly with area spells, as she will immediately vanish and spirit your companion away.
-
2
Arabella's stone and the Kith'rak alcove
From the City Sewers Waypoint, cross south over the channel to coordinates X: -133 Y: 773 to find young Arabella communing with a resonant street stone surrounded by dead thugs. Pass a DC 15 Arcana check to help her interpret the stone's echoes of Baldur's Gate and encourage her independence, then circle back slightly north of the waypoint into an adjoining chamber. Speak to Kith'rak Voss and his red dragon Qudenos, who waits here in Dragonborn disguise if you refused Raphael's deal in Sharess' Caress.
Tip: Inspiring Arabella to master her innate magic ensures she bestows a powerful unique buff during the final campaign gathering.
-
3
The Grease Sorcerer and Sarin's Skeleton
Head northwest through the greasy pipelines to coordinates X: -125 Y: 829, where the deranged sorcerer Aelis Siryasius fiercely guards a headless coffin. Engage or provoke Aelis along with his conjured grease minions to loot the uncommon cloak from his corpse. Approach the headless remains labeled Sarin's Skeleton at coordinates X: -124 Y: 827, then open the skeleton's inventory interface and insert Sarin's Skull into the empty slot so her apparition manifests to bestow her unique amulet.
Key fight: Aelis SiryasiusTip: Fire damage will rapidly ignite the entire intersection into an explosive inferno; douse the grease pools or eliminate the mephits from range.
Watch out: Sarin's Skull must be retrieved from the neighbouring Undercity Ruins before interacting with Sarin's Skeleton, because if you disturb the coffin without the skull while Aelis lives, he turns permanently hostile.
-
4
Central sewage docks and western crossings
Move west past the grease spill to find Dairow Vin passed out among sleeping potions at coordinates X: -155 Y: 846, afflicted by an incurable Impenetrable Slumber over his lost partner. Continue southwest to the pier at coordinates X: -150 Y: 810 to encounter Lorna Esthelian waiting for a date, then search the dead Kobold Thief at coordinates X: -171 Y: 853 to secure a helpful overview chart of the waterways. Board the moving sewage raft to cross the western canal toward the Abandoned Cistern tunnels, keeping your party clear of floating grease traps in the current.
Tip: You can use *Create or Destroy Water* or *Ice Knife* on floating grease slicks to safely step across muck-filled junctions without catching fire.
Watch out: The brick wall near the sewage raft dock leads into Nine-Fingers Keene's vault, but it cannot be picked or broken from the sewer side; attempting to force it wastes resources.

5
The Sluice Gate and the Stone Lord
Advance to the far western tunnels at coordinates X: -186 Y: 883, dispatching the Bhaalist ambushers before approaching the Sluice Gate puzzle controls. Interact with the Water Level valve on the left, monitor the rising gauge until it hits the green zone, then turn the Temperature valve on the right to align both meters and open the great gate (or force the stuck valve with a DC 25 Athletics check). Step through into the inner cistern to confront the Stone Lord, his Bhaalist entourage, and Roah Moonglow, toggling non-lethal attacks for all melee strikes against Minsc so he can be knocked unconscious and saved alongside Boo.
Tip: Burst down or crowd-control Roah Moonglow immediately on Turn 1 to recover the stolen 10,000 Counting House gold before she flees out the back pipe.
Watch out: Killing Minsc with lethal damage, using active damage-over-time effects on him, or refusing the Emperor's psychic protection will cause Jaheira to permanently abandon your party or turn hostile.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Aelis Siryasius's Confrontation
Approaching Sarin's coffin at `X: -125, Y: 829`
- Pass a DC 18 Charisma check→ Aelis and his grease creatures stand down temporarily, allowing you to pass without fighting
- Fail or attack→ fight and kill Aelis to loot the Cindermoth Cloak, making the area permanently safe
Most players pick: Pass a DC 18 Charisma check
Interacting with Sarin's coffin still triggers hostility if Aelis is alive; fighting him is often necessary to complete Sarin's Skeleton puzzle safely.
Kith'rak Voss and the Orphic Hammer
Speaking to Voss in his sewer hideout after obtaining the Orphic Hammer
- Show him the hammer and agree to free Orpheus→ Voss rewards you with the legendary Silver Sword of the Astral Plane and pledges his red dragon riders for the final battle
- Refuse to help Orpheus, withhold the hammer, or attack him→ fight and kill Voss and his guards, forfeiting the Silver Sword and his faction's endgame summon
Most players pick: Show him the hammer and agree to free Orpheus
Only occurs if you did not sign Raphael's pact earlier at Sharess' Caress (where Voss gives the sword in the brothel instead).
Fate of Minsc (The Stone Lord)
During the battle in the Abandoned Cistern inner chamber
- Knock out Minsc using non-lethal melee attacks and kill all other enemies→ initiates a dialogue to spare him; Jaheira remains loyal
- Kill Minsc with lethal attacks or spells→ Minsc and Boo die permanently; Jaheira immediately becomes hostile or abandons your party forever
Most players pick: Knock out Minsc using non-lethal melee attacks
Non-lethal damage applies only to unarmed or melee weapon attacks, and any lingering damage-over-time effects will cause lethal death.
The Emperor's Protection for Minsc
Immediately after knocking out Minsc in the Cistern
- Insist that the Emperor shield Minsc's mind and guide Minsc to realize Jaheira was an impostor→ Minsc and Boo are recruited into your party and camp
- Agree with the Emperor that Minsc is too dangerous or execute him→ Minsc dies; Jaheira permanently leaves your party in disgust
Most players pick: Insist that the Emperor shield Minsc's mind
Minsc is required to recruit Boo; losing Minsc guarantees losing Jaheira permanently as well.
Roah Moonglow's Escape
Turn 1 of combat in the Abandoned Cistern
- Intercept and defeat Roah Moonglow before she flees→ immediately recover the stolen Counting House pouch containing 10,000 gold and prevent her from aiding the Zhentarim assault
- Allow Roah to escape down the sewer pipes→ she flees to the Guildhall, forcing you to resolve the gang war there before recovering the stolen gold
Most players pick: Intercept and defeat Roah Moonglow before she flees
If Roah died in Act 1 or 2, she is replaced here by Boss Friol, who carries the gold pouch instead.
