Crossing into this restricted hall instantly blankets your party in magical silence while several undead defenders ambush you. The short version

What matters

  • •The Spear of Night rests inside the locked inner sanctum and is required for Shadowheart's personal quest regarding Dame Aylin.
  • •The Librarian emits an encounter-wide Silence field that shuts down all verbal spellcasting until destroyed.
  • •Disarming the northeast bookcase (X: -772, Y: -741) yields Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger, the key to the inner vault.
  • •The vault holds the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate and the Dark Justiciar Helmet, both potent pieces of gear for obscured combat.

Common mistakes

  • •Casting verbal spells while standing within the library perimeter before killing The Librarian; use weapon attacks or destroy the central orb first.
  • •Shadowheart refuses to enter the Shadowfell without the Spear of Night (turning hostile if forced), locking out her Shar-sworn path and causing her to permanently abandon the party if the Nightsong encounter is resolved without her.
  • •Blundering into the Riddle of the Night pedestal room without detecting the gas pit traps, which trigger an entangling Evard's Black Tentacles effect.

What you can skip

  • •Trapped peripheral bookshelves holding non-essential Sharran texts can be safely ignored to save disarm kits, but take care not to trigger nearby area-of-effect damage that could destroy the required book.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Breach the Shimmering Veil

When you step down into the entrance archway of the Silent Library at coordinates X: -756, Y: -753, you cross a shimmering veil that immediately imposes a permanent Silence field across the entire room. Send your martial and ranged weapon users ahead while keeping verbal spellcasters near the outer stairs. Before committing your whole party, observe the floating orb known as The Librarian at the chamber's center along with patrolling Dark Justiciars.

Tip: Martial characters, archers, and non-verbal skills are unaffected by the room's Silence aura.

Watch out: Entering with a full spellcasting party leaves your casters helpless until the silence field is dispelled.

  2. 2

    Destroy The Librarian

Rush directly to the center of the library at coordinates X: -760, Y: -735 to focus down The Librarian before it can summon waves of Justiciars. Once The Librarian falls, the area-wide Silence field immediately lifts and spellcasting is restored throughout the hall. Mop up the remaining Justiciar Nightweavers, Avenging Justiciars, and Justiciar Soulhunters who patrol the perimeter.

    Key fight: The Librarian

Tip: Lure melee Justiciars back toward the entry archway if you need to hit them with verbal spells cast from outside the perimeter before The Librarian dies.

Watch out: Ignoring The Librarian lets it continuously spawn reinforcements as an Umbral Tremor while keeping your spells muted.

  3. 3

Disarm the Bookcase and Claim the Riddle Book

Search the north wall bookcases for the specific Sharran volume needed for the trial plinth. Approach the second bookcase from the entrance at coordinates X: -771, Y: -742, pass a DC 15 Perception check to detect the tripwire, and succeed on a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check to disarm it safely. Interact with the disarmed bookcase to collect Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger.

Tip: Keep a Trap Disarm Toolkit ready, as failing to disarm this bookcase triggers an explosion or acid blast.

Watch out: Looting without disarming ruins the bookcase with an explosion that can damage party members.

  4. 4

    Unlock the Iron Portcullis

Head to the western end of the library where an iron portcullis blocks access to the rear sanctum. You can bypass the gate by succeeding on a DC 21 Sleight of Hand check with Thieves' Tools, pressing the small wall button nearby, or firing a ranged weapon through the iron bars at the interior lever. Once open, step inside the gated chamber to find the Riddle of the Night pedestal.

Tip: You can shoot the wall lever on the far side through the portcullis bars using an arrow or cantrip to bypass lockpicking entirely.

  5. 5

Solve the Riddle of the Night

Interact with the Riddle of the Night plinth in the center of the alcove to read the prompt "What can silence the Nightsong?". Open the insertion slot on the plinth and insert Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger into the receptacle. Submitting the book satisfies Shar's test and lowers the secret stone door in the back wall.

Tip: Double-check that you place The Nightsinger text rather than any of the other three Teachings of Loss volumes found in the library.

Watch out: Inserting the wrong book fails to trigger the mechanism, leaving the inner vault door shut.

  6. 6

Step through the opened secret door into the inner treasure chamber, watching ou

tip: Having Shadowheart pick up the Spear of Night earns the Acolyte inspiration "Made of Shadows".

Tip: Having Shadowheart pick up the Spear of Night earns the Acolyte inspiration "Made of Shadows".

Watch out: Entering the Shadowfell pool past the Verge of the Shadows without looting the Spear of Night permanently seals the library and prevents completing Shadowheart's rite to slay the Nightsong.

Key fights

The Librarian

Enemies: The Librarian (an Umbral Tremor orb), Justiciar Soulhunters, and Justiciar Nightweavers

Threats: The Librarian projects an area-wide permanent Silence aura that blocks all verbal spellcasting and spawns additional Dark Justiciar reinforcements each round; the Justiciars use Shadow Step for teleportation, multiattacks with necrotic damage, and darkness spells

Weaknesses and resistances: The Librarian is an inanimate construct immune to psychic/poison and crowd control, while Justiciars resist necrotic and poison damage but are vulnerable to radiant damage and bludgeoning damage; Silence prevents party spellcasters from casting inside the library

Tactics: Hold the doorway/entrance stairs as an elevated chokepoint just outside the silence barrier to allow spellcasters to cast spells into the room; focus all initial ranged attacks and martial dash attacks to burst down The Librarian in the center of the room to immediately dispel the silence field and stop enemy reinforcements, then funnel and eliminate the surviving Justiciars at the doorway

Rewards: Spear of Night (essential for Shadowheart's questline with Nightsong), Dark Justiciar Helmet, Dark Justiciar Half-Plate, and the riddle solution book *Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger*.

Enemies

The Librarian

A floating orb in the center of the chamber maintaining the area-wide Silence field; destroying it restores your ability to cast spells.

Justiciar Soulhunter

Undead warrior that engages party members in melee combat within the room.

Justiciar Nightweaver

Undead spellcaster and ranged combatant supporting the library guards.

Tips

  • Stand outside the library entrance with your spellcasters to blast The Librarian with ranged magic, since the silence aura only affects party members standing inside the room.
