Shadowfell
Traversed after passing through the pool in the Gauntlet of Shar, the party descends across floating rocks in Shar's domain to reach the Nightsong's Prison. Here, you confront Balthazar if he was not already defeated and decide the ultimate fate of the Nightsong (Dame Aylin). This critical juncture serves as a point of no return for Act Two, locking out previous locations and heavily shaping Shadowheart's destiny.

The short version
What matters
- •Deciding whether to spare or execute Dame Aylin, which drastically shapes Shadowheart's character path, party gear, and the fate of the entire Shadow-Cursed Lands.
- •Searching Balthazar's corpse for the Circle of Bones headpiece immediately after defeating him in the prison plateau.
- •Grabbing the missable Dark Justiciar Helm from the skeleton on the side platform before leaping to the final encounter.
Common mistakes
- •Entering the Shadowfell without Shadowheart in your active party; doing so causes her to permanently abandon your camp in fury once you return.
- •Entering the pool before finishing open Act 1 and Act 2 quests, which permanently locks out the Wilderness, Underdark, Mountain Pass, and causes the prisoners in Moonrise Towers to perish.
- •Trying to force Shadowheart to spare Aylin with the initial dialogue prompt instead of letting Aylin mention her wolf memories, which unnecessarily subjects you to a brutal DC 30 Persuasion check.
Walkthrough
The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.
-
1
Arrival and Descent
When you arrive on the high rocky landing of the Shadowfell, note the reduced gravity that allows your party to leap vast distances across the chasm without sustaining fall damage. Follow the chain of floating stone islands downward toward the northwest. Before leaping across to the central platform, check the skeleton on an intermediate ledge to your northeast for missable gear.
Tip: Use the altered gravity to leap effortlessly between islands without needing movement-enhancing spells.

2
Confronting Balthazar
When you leap onto the central plateau of Nightsong's Prison (X: -606, Y: -1435), Dame Aylin sits bound in Shar's circle, where Balthazar confronts you to claim her for Ketheric Thorm if you did not destroy him earlier in the Gauntlet. If Balthazar is present, refuse to let him take her to trigger an all-out battle across the platform while he summons legions of undead from bone piles. Once you destroy Balthazar, search his remains immediately to claim his unique headwear, alchemy supplies, and rare scrolls before speaking with the captive.
Key fight: Confrontation over the NightsongTip: Counterspell Balthazar's high-level Animate Dead or shove his heavy undead summons off the edges into the void.
Watch out: Handing the Nightsong over to Balthazar causes Shadowheart to immediately turn hostile and permanently leave your party.

Deciding Dame Aylin's Fate
When you approach the trapped Dame Aylin with Shadowheart, speak with the captive aasimar to initiate the defining moment of Shadowheart's devotion. If you urge Shadowheart to fulfill Shar's decree and execute Dame Aylin with the Spear of Night, Shar immediately blesses her with legendary armaments. Alternatively, if you trust Shadowheart to choose for herself after Aylin reveals her childhood memories—or succeed on a difficult Persuasion check—she casts the spear into the void, liberating Dame Aylin and granting your party a radiant weapon upon her ascent.
Tip: Let Aylin mention Shadowheart's childhood wolf memories first so you avoid an otherwise staggering DC 30 Persuasion check.
Watch out: Killing the Nightsong causes the protective barrier at Last Light Inn to collapse, condemning Isobel, Jaheira, Dammon, and nearly all inn residents to death.

4
Departure from the Shadowfell
After the confrontation concludes, speak with Shadowheart to process the outcome of her devotion and her standing with her goddess. Once Dame Aylin ascends toward Moonrise Towers or her corpse lies cold, interact with the planar portal to leave the Shadowfell and return to the material plane. Ensure your entire party is thoroughly healed and rested before stepping through, as you exit back into the Gauntlet of Shar before marching on Moonrise Towers.
Watch out: You cannot return to the Shadowfell once you step through the exit portal, permanently sealing off any unlooted items.
Choices here
What you decide here and what it leads to.
Balthazar's Claim
Reaching Nightsong's Prison if Balthazar was not killed in the Gauntlet
- Refuse and attack Balthazar→ Triggers a boss battle against Balthazar and his undead horde; keeps Shadowheart in the party
- Let Balthazar take Aylin→ Balthazar teleports Aylin to Moonrise Towers; Shadowheart permanently leaves the party in outrage
Most players pick: Refuse and attack Balthazar
Missable combat encounter if Balthazar was already killed in his Gauntlet laboratory.
Fate of the Nightsong
Speaking to Dame Aylin after Balthazar is dead
- Spare Aylin (persuade Shadowheart or let her decide)→ Aylin is freed to assault Moonrise Towers, Shadowheart defies Shar, Last Light Inn stays protected, and you receive Selûne's Spear of Night later
- Kill Aylin (let or urge Shadowheart to strike)→ Aylin is slain, Shadowheart becomes a Dark Justiciar and receives Shar's Spear of Evening, but the protective shield over Last Light Inn collapses, corrupting and killing almost everyone there
Most players pick: Spare Aylin
Forcing Shadowheart directly requires a high Persuasion check (up to DC 30), whereas letting her think for herself allows her to throw the spear away naturally if you have sufficient approval/points.
Checklists
Don't miss 0/4
Key fights
Enemies: Balthazar, Apostate Destroyers, Apostate Wraiths, and Reconstituted Duelists / Marksmen / Warriors
Threats: Animate Dead (raises huge waves of undead simultaneously), Cloudkill, Ray of Sickness, Misty Step, and bone-shoving undead that can push party members into the surrounding chasm
Weaknesses and resistances: Undead vulnerabilities to Radiant damage, Turn Undead, and Silence/Counterspell to neuter spellcasting; completely immune to Poison damage
Tactics: Leave ranged attackers and spellcasters back on the elevated rock platforms before jumping down to avoid the chasm edges, shut down Balthazar immediately with Silence or burst Radiant damage before his summons overwhelm you, and use area denial (Spirit Guardians, Wall of Fire) or throw bone piles off the ledge before the dialogue begins
Rewards: Circle of Bones, rare scrolls/alchemy supplies, and determining the fate of the Nightsong (Dame Aylin)
Enemies
Undead necromancer accompanied by summoned undead like Apostate Destroyers, Apostate Defenders, and Apostate Librarians if engaged in the Shadowfell
Tips
- Cross the threshold into the Shadowfell only after finishing any incomplete business in the Shadow-Cursed Lands and Moonrise Towers, as entering advances the world state and cuts off access to Act One regions.
