Goblin Camp

Baldur's Gate 3 guide · The exterior encampment of the Absolute cultists ✓ Checked against sources
← All areas in this guide

The exterior courtyard serves as a heavily guarded outpost where Absolute cultists drink, carouse, and keep captives before entering the inner sanctum. You can bluff, fight, or sneak past the guards at the gate to gain entry, rescue the bard Volo from captivity, trade with looters, or compete in the local chicken-chasing contest. You can also choose to poison the outdoor festivities or wipe out the camp's defenses entirely.

The short version

What matters

  • •Lacing the central booze tub quietly eliminates roughly half the outdoor guards, making later clearing trivial.
  • •Acquiring Crusher's Ring provides a permanent +3m movement speed bonus that benefits any melee build throughout the entire game.
  • •Freeing the captive Owlbear Cub from Krolla's pen ensures it safely joins Scratch as a companion at your long rest camp.
  • •Buying the Returning Pike from Grat the Trader is essential for tavern brawler throwing builds.

Common mistakes

  • •Spiking the booze tub before talking to Volo, which can break the *Rescue Volo* quest and cause him to vanish completely instead of being imprisoned inside.
  • •Executing Novice Crusher in the courtyard after he surrenders, as doing so turns the entire exterior camp red-hostile instantly; let him leave and ambush him privately.
  • •Delaying your purchases from Grat the Trader, because killing the cult leaders inside the Shattered Sanctum immediately triggers camp-wide permanent hostility.

What you can skip

  • •Competing legitimately in Krolla's chicken chasing without animal dialogue, as the payouts are negligible and rigged.
  • •Smearing worg dung on your face at the entrance checkpoint, which confers no mechanical benefit over basic Illithid persuasion.

Walkthrough

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

    Forest Road Checkpoint

When you approach the wooden outpost bridge west of the Blighted Village, Sentinel Olak halts your party alongside war worgs. You can bypass them peacefully by using [Illithid] Wisdom (DC 2), passing a DC 15 dialogue check, relying on Drow ancestry, or smearing worg dung on your face. Before crossing, note that flinging the dung at the guards or failing your bluffs initiates combat exclusively with this perimeter post.

Tip: Choosing Drow dialogue or Illithid persuasion earns clean entry without companion disapproval.

Watch out: Flinging dung at Olak immediately triggers combat with the outpost guards.

  2. 2

    Waterfall Chasm & Entry Bridge

Cross the main stone bridge spanning the waterfall ravine toward the heavy courtyard arches. Before ascending into the camp proper, hop down the rocky ledges beside the bridge to access a hidden chest near the water. Unlock the trapped heavy cache to secure rare supplies and a secret letter before tagging the Goblin Camp Waypoint just past the front arches.

Tip: Disarm the waterfall chest before opening it to avoid explosive trap damage.

Watch out: Dropping into the waterfall ravine from the wrong angle can inflict fatal fall damage without Feather Fall.

  3. 3

    Central Courtyard & Volo's Stage

Enter the main courtyard to find Volothamp Geddarm singing atop a crude wooden stage under the watch of the goblin Gribbo. Interacting with Volo interrupts his performance, causing Gribbo to drag him inside toward the Shattered Sanctum and triggering *Rescue Volo*. Before moving onward, talk to Tracker Klagga by the roasted dwarf to acquire the *Dwarf's Poem* via dialogue checks or pickpocketing, and trade with Grat the Trader for unique gear like the Returning Pike and Boots of Aid and Comfort.

Tip: Bards can pass a Performance check to finish Volo's song for an easy +15 XP bonus.

Watch out: Do not poison the courtyard alcohol before Volo is escorted inside, or his questline can bug and cause him to flee permanently.

  4. 4

    Spiking the Booze Tub

While hidden or invisible, interact with the communal booze tub near the feast spit to lace the goblin beverage with Basic Poison or Wyvern Toxin. When Sharp-Eye Mirg confronts you to toast, pass a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check to fake drinking or endure a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. Once consumed, half the courtyard goblins keel over dead on the spot, drastically thinning the outdoor garrison.

Tip: Enter turn-based mode while sneaking or invisible to spike the tub without getting spotted by nearby scouts.

Watch out: Failing the bluff or getting caught poisoning the alcohol instantly turns the entire exterior camp hostile.

  5. 5

    Eastern Courtyard & Crusher's Ring

Head into the eastern courtyard where Novice Crusher is boasting before a crowd and demanding you kiss his foot. You can kneel and pass a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check to steal Crusher's Ring right off his toe, or challenge him to a non-lethal brawl. If you fight, reduce his hit points below 50% so he yields, then let him retreat to the stone bridge alone where you can eliminate him silently out of earshot.

Tip: Sparing Crusher when he yields allows you to ambush him in isolation near the bridge to claim his ring without camp aggro.

Watch out: Striking a killing blow on Crusher while he begs for mercy in front of the crowd turns the entire encampment hostile immediately.

  6. 6

    Western Pens & Chicken Chasing

Walk over to the western courtyard pens where the goblin Krolla operates the chicken-chasing ring. If you previously cleared the mother in the Owlbear Cave, the captive Owlbear Cub appears here as the runner; cast *Speak with Animals* to direct it toward the finish posts, or wager gold on the race. Once the game concludes, speak to the cub to catch your scent, then confront Krolla using a DC 15 dialogue check or Illithid Wisdom (DC 2) to demand custody so it can safely escape into the wilderness.

Tip: Casting *Speak with Animals* before starting the mini-game lets you convince the cub to dash straight through the posts.

Watch out: Wiping out the exterior camp before securing the cub risks killing it in crossfire or scaring it away permanently.

  7. 7

    Upper Temple Ledges & Cliffs

Climb the ruined exterior stone staircases and knotted roots along the perimeter walls to access the high ledges overlooking the camp. Walk north onto the high ridge path behind the camp walls (X: -53, Y: 461) to find a locked wooden chest containing the Glowing Shield. Once collected, inspect the stone upper walkways to position vantage points above the courtyard or proceed straight to the heavy oak double doors leading into the Shattered Sanctum.

Tip: The high ramparts provide high-ground advantage and line-of-sight concealment if you choose to wipe out the remaining exterior cultists.

Watch out: Stepping too close to sleeping bugbears on the upper ledges while unstealthed will wake them and initiate combat.

Choices here

What you decide here and what it leads to.

Entering the Outpost Checkpoint

Approaching Sentinel Olak at the forest bridge

  • Pass dialogue checks or use Illithid Wisdom→ Enter the camp peacefully without hostility
  • Smear dung on your face→ Enter peacefully, gaining approval from Shadowheart and Karlach (and disapproval from Astarion)
  • Attack the guards or fling dung at them→ Triggers combat with checkpoint guards; camp interior remains neutral unless alerted

Most players pick: Pass dialogue checks or use Illithid Wisdom

Flinging dung at Olak gains approval from Astarion, Lae'zel, and Karlach, but starts combat with the gate sentinels.

Novice Crusher's Ring

Confronting Novice Crusher by the stage near the waypoint

  • Kiss his foot and succeed a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check→ Steal Crusher's Ring directly from his toe without combat
  • Refuse and win the duel/Intimidation checks, spare him, then ambush him on the bridge→ Loot Crusher's Ring safely away from witnesses
  • Execute him during the duel surrender→ Turns the entire camp immediately hostile

Most players pick: Refuse and win the duel/Intimidation checks, spare him, then ambush him on the bridge

Killing Crusher in the open triggers immediate aggro from the entire camp.

Rescuing the Owlbear Cub

Interacting with Krolla and the captive cub in the western pens

  • Win or decline Chicken Chasing, then use dialogue checks or Illithid Wisdom on Krolla to release the cub→ The cub gains your scent and later joins your campsite as a camp pet/companion
  • Attack the goblins or ignore the cub→ Cub is either killed in crossfire, runs away, or remains captive

Most players pick: Use dialogue checks or Illithid Wisdom to claim the cub

The party must trigger an interaction with the mother in the cave and long rest; the mother does not have to be killed by the player directly.

Interrupting Volo's Performance

Approaching the central courtyard stage

  • Speak to Volo to interrupt his song→ Gribbo locks Volo in a cage inside the Shattered Sanctum, advancing "Rescue Volo" so he can later be freed to join your camp
  • Ignore or attack the performance→ Risking open combat in the courtyard before Volo is safely moved inside

Most players pick: Speak to Volo to interrupt his song

Interrupting safely moves Volo out of the courtyard crossfire into an interior cage.

Tampering with the Booze Tub

Interacting with the communal alcohol vat in the central courtyard

  • Spike the tub with poison while stealthed, then bluff the toast→ Kills roughly half the courtyard goblins outright without turning the survivors instantly hostile
  • Drink the poisoned booze without bluffing/saving→ Party takes damage and triggers immediate courtyard combat
  • Leave the tub alone→ Courtyard remains fully manned and trader Grat stays available for commerce

Most players pick: Spike the tub with poison while stealthed, then bluff the toast

Poisoning causes trader Grat to stop trading or die, so buy all unique items before spiking the barrel.
