Vault 101 serves as the tutorial and prologue area where the player grows up from an infant to a young adult, establishing their character's appearance, SPECIAL stats, and tagged skills. After the player's father suddenly escapes the vault, the player must flee the hostile security guards and radroaches to exit through the main vault door into the Capital Wasteland.

Hostile guards that patrol corridors during the escape; some can be avoided with stealth.

Tips

Make sure to grab the Medicine Bobblehead from your father's desk before leaving, as you will not be able to return to Vault 101 until much later in the game.
You can convince Warden Almodovar to stand down peacefully or avoid killing specific vault residents to make a potential future return less hostile.
Just before stepping out of the vault entrance into the Capital Wasteland, the game gives you one final chance to reconfigure your character's name, appearance, SPECIAL attributes, and skills.
