Firelink Shrine acts as the central hub of Lordran where you arrive after escaping the Undead Asylum. It connects to multiple early and mid-game routes including the Undead Burg, the Catacombs, and New Londo Ruins. You will meet several non-player characters here who offer spells, services, and guidance as you progress.

Reach LordranDefeat the Asylum Demon, escape the asylum, and be carried to Firelink Shrine by the giant crow.

Stepping onto the ruined elevator roof from the Undead Parish shortcut allows you to roll onto the buttress and reach the crow's nest, taking you back to the Northern Undead Asylum.Falling down the open shaft when the elevator to the Undead Parish is raised reveals a hidden lower floor containing four loot chests.

Crestfallen Warrior: Dialogue hints and early direction on the two Bells of Awakening
Anastacia of Astora: Upgrades the power of your Estus Flask in exchange for Fire Keeper Souls
Petrus of Thorolund: Sells basic Miracles, a Talisman, and allows entry into the Way of White covenant

Tips

If you find early enemies in the graveyard or the ruins below too overwhelming, follow the cliffside stairs up toward the aqueduct to reach the proper starting progression in the Undead Burg.
Do not strike Anastacia of Astora or the Crestfallen Warrior, as friendly NPCs stay hostile once aggroed unless pardoned by Oswald of Carim later in the game.
