Resident Evil 4 guide · Navigating the flooded area

Leon and Ashley enter the grand Water Hall inside the Castle during Chapter 8 to reach the upper courtyard. Leon must lower a series of platforms by interacting with wall cranks while fighting off waves of Zealots, followed by hoisting Ashley to an upper terrace so she can turn two distant cranks while he protects her from below.

The Water Hall Crank & Platform Defense

Enemies: Waves of Zealots (scythes, maces, shields, wooden bows) and a Red Zealot

Threats: Crossbow suppression from upper balconies, shield walls bottlenecking the central walkway, and attempts to grab Ashley while she cranks the upper mechanisms

Weaknesses and resistances: Flash grenades instantly kill exposed Plagas heads; headshots stumble shield-bearers; Zealots carrying Ashley are vulnerable to any damage

Tactics: Clear the lower sunken hall by using the central stairs as a chokepoint and sniping upper archers; lower the bridge with the pressure pads/crank; then protect Ashley with a rifle from the ground floor as she turns the two upper wall cranks to raise the halo platforms

Rewards: Access to the upper balcony path exiting the hall, Gold Bangle (from an upper chest), and assorted pesetas/ammo drops from zealots

Armed with scythes, shields, crossbows, and flails; prioritize shield-bearers with a shotgun or rifle.

Chants to buff other cultists, force parasites to burst, and stun Leon with an incantation; high-priority target.

Tips

Use the rifle to snipe cultists attempting to carry Ashley away on the upper balcony before they reach the exit door.
Shoot the wooden shields carried by Zealots directly in the center with a rifle or magnum to shatter them in a single shot.
Before hoisting Ashley up to the upper cranks, clear out all remaining ground-level enemies so Leon can focus solely on sniping Ashley's attackers.
