The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide · Initial investigation

During the initial investigation of Hyrule Castle, Link explores the lower sanctum and ramparts floating above the ground to search for Princess Zelda and meet Captain Hoz. While the full castle interior contains powerful gear and dangerous foes, this early-game mission strictly directs you to the First Gatehouse to speak with the search squad. Afterwards, you return to Lookout Landing to report your findings to Purah and unlock the Skyview Towers.

The Hylian Shield can be obtained early by entering the Castle Docks cave entrance from the north, climbing the stairs, and lighting the large solitary brazier surrounded by stone torches to spawn a treasure chest.

Captain Hoz

Friendly NPC located on the roof of the First Gatehouse; speak to him to progress the main quest "Crisis at Hyrule Castle."

Gloom Spawn

Weak to Fire, explosives, and multi-shot arrows

Appears in lower regions of the castle such as the Docks and exterior corridors; defeats into Phantom Ganon.

Black Moblin

Weak to Headshots with arrows

Wanders the path and gatehouses leading up the castle; deals heavy damage to early-game Link.

Tips

Launching into the air from the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and gliding across using stamina-restoring foods is an easy way to reach the upper sections of the floating castle early.
You do not need to defeat the powerful enemies roaming the pathways; you can run or climb past them directly to Captain Hoz's position.
