FINAL FANTASY IX guide · The underground volcano

The party enters Mount Gulug to rescue Eiko after she is abducted by Zorn and Thorn. Players must explore the abandoned volcanic mining complex, pull a series of well-mechanism levers to lower a rope down the central shaft, and proceed to the bottom. At the base, Eiko receives the Eidolon Madeen, followed by a boss fight against Meltigemini.

Lower the central well rope by interacting with the mechanism lever at the crossroads: crank it down three times, then search the lever three times to unlock the descent to the bottom levels.

Uses powerful breath attacks and can be fought twice as scripted encounters in the side paths.

Uses physical and Earth-based attacks and can inflict poison.

Meltigemini

Weak to Fire, HolySteal / drop Vaccine, Golden Hairpin, Demon's Vest

Boss that uses Viral Smoke to inflict the Virus status on the entire party.

Tips

Equip the Body Temp support ability on all active party members before exploring Mount Gulug to completely negate Freeze and Heat statuses.
Equip the Antibody support ability on your party for the Meltigemini boss fight to prevent the deadly Venom status.
The entire Mount Gulug location becomes completely inaccessible after completing the boss fight, so collect all chests before descending to save Eiko.
