The Last of Us™ Part I guide · Traversing the underground tunnels
← All areas in this guide

Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam enter the drainage tunnels after escaping the beach near the Pittsburgh outskirts to evade hunters. They must navigate dark, flood-damaged corridors, disarm improvised traps, and solve water-crossing puzzles to find their way through an abandoned subterranean survivor community. The trek culminates in a chaotic ambush when the group accidentally triggers a sound alarm and gets separated while trying to reach the surface.

Enemies

Clicker
Weak to Headshots with high-power weapons, Shivs, Shotgun blasts

Blind but detects movement via echolocation; instant-kill melee if it reaches Joel unless equipped with an upgradeable defensive shiv

Stalker
Weak to Melee attacks, Shotgun

Aggressive infected that actively take cover, peek around corners, and ambush Joel in packs within the darker nursery and classroom tunnels

Runner
Weak to Melee, standard firearms

Fast, sighted infected encountered in mixed groups throughout the later tunnels; easy to dispatch with stealth takedowns if approached from behind

Tips

  • Use your flashlight sparingly around Stalkers, as they will coordinate flanking maneuvers in the dark corridors once alerted.
  • When ferrying Ellie across the flooded reservoir with the wooden pallet, look for floating scrap and supplies tucked along the submerged walkways before starting the engine generator.
  • During the door-defense sequence near the exit, place a nail bomb near the hallway bottleneck to eliminate the initial cluster of sprinting infected before they breach the barrier.
