Route 101 connects your home of Littleroot Town directly north to Oldale Town. Here, you rescue Professor Birch from a wild Zigzagoon by choosing your first starter Pokémon from his briefcase. After the rescue, this short route serves as your first opportunity to battle wild Pokémon in tall grass.

- Professor Birch's Bag: One starter Pokémon of your choice: Treecko (Grass), Torchic (Fire), or Mudkip (Water)
Tips
- You cannot catch any wild Pokémon on your first trip through Route 101, so focus on leveling up your starter until you receive Poké Balls from Birch later.
- If your starter takes too much damage while training here, walk back down into Littleroot Town to have your mother heal your party for free.
