The short version

What matters

  • •Studying and hunting the exclusive island wildlife along Arroyo de la Víbora and Bahía de la Paz (the macaws, booby, boa, and turtle) for your compendium.
  • •Knocking the collectible Sun Hat off Cuban soldiers during infiltration missions before escaping Guarma.
  • •Grabbing the missable Sunken Cuban Hat from the coastal shipwreck prior to the chapter's end.

Common mistakes

  • •Finishing "Paradise Mercifully Departed" before inspecting the wildlife, which permanently locks out the Guarma-exclusive compendium entries.
  • •Stepping heedlessly onto covered jungle paths between missions and falling into the camouflaged punji-stick pit trap ambush.
  • •Overlooking the Green Sea Turtle along the Bahía de la Paz surf upon initial arrival, missing the journal sketch before heading into the interior.

What you can skip

  • •Searching for towns with merchants, shops, or weapon upgrade vendors, as Guarma has none.

The area in the order you play it. Tick things off as you go: they tick off in the checklists below too.

  1. 1

Stranded on Bahía de la Paz

When you awaken shipwrecked and weaponless on the sands of Bahía de la Paz, inspect the coastal surf with your binoculars to log the Green Sea Turtle in your journal before moving inland. Follow the shoreline until you encounter Dutch, Bill, Javier, and Micah, which leads directly to your group being captured into an armed chain-gang bound for Aguasdulces.

Tip: Use your binoculars while on the beach to sketch the turtle into your journal.

Watch out: Warning: You can permanently miss the Green Sea Turtle because it cannot be tracked after you leave Guarma, which is cut off from normal gameplay once Chapter 5 concludes.

  2. 2

Ambush at the Stream and Rebel Sanctuary

During the prisoner march along the stream, fight alongside Hercule Fontaine when his rebel forces trigger an ambush to break your chains. Follow Fontaine back to the rebel base located among the ruined fortifications of Cinco Torres, where Dutch, Bill, Micah, and Leon Fuentes regroup. Keep in mind that this island features no traders, shops, merchants, or equipment upgrade vendors.

Tip: Take note of your allies' resting spots in the ruins while planning your next moves.

  3. 3

    Infiltrating Aguasdulces and Wildlife Tracking

Head out along the Arroyo de la Víbora river to track the exclusive native birds and reptiles, including the Scarlet Macaw near the waterfall, the Great Green Macaw in the canopy, the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, the Red-Footed Booby over the skies and coast, and the Rainbow Boa in the tall grass. Continue into the Aguasdulces town compound and its sugar refinery, slipping through the jungle to liberate Javier from the military holding area and sabotaging the factory. Shoot the Sun Hat off the heads of patrolling Cuban soldiers around the plantation grounds to collect it, and stay alert on the jungle paths between missions to survive or trigger the hidden punji-stick pit trap ambush.

Tip: Utilize Dead Eye and accurate firearms like a rifle or repeater to bring down flying macaws and boobies before searching the brush.

Watch out: Warning: All unique fauna like the macaws, booby, and Rainbow Boa, as well as the Sun Hat and the pit trap ambush, will become permanently unobtainable once you conclude your time on the island.

  4. 4

    Clashing at Cinco Torres

Back at the Cinco Torres ruin base where Javier recovers on a bedroll, brace for an assault during "Savagery Unleashed" against Levi Simon and his guards, who drop standard ammunition when killed. Prepare your defenses alongside the rebels as an offshore warship and waves of infantry mount a full invasion against the fortress walls. Repel the hostile troops and withstand the naval shelling to secure the encampment perimeter.

Tip: Collect dropped regular ammunition from fallen guards during the firefight to keep your weapons supplied.

Watch out: Warning: Guarma guards cannot be fought again after departing without utilizing out-of-bounds glitches.

  5. 5

    Coastal Artillery and Departure

Advance on the island's coastal artillery positions to dismantle the cannons that guard the waters. Once the defensive guns are destroyed, clear the remaining opposition and prepare to board the vessel to sail back to the mainland. Finishing this final operation permanently closes off access to Guarma.

Tip: Double-check that you have completed every desired wildlife recording before boarding the escape ship.

Watch out: Warning: Completing "Paradise Mercifully Departed" permanently bars you from returning to Guarma, locking out all uncollected island-exclusive animal Compendium entries.
