Outer Wilds guide · Starting planet, tutorial area
← All areas in this guide

Timber Hearth is the lush, crater-filled home planet of the Hearthian species where the player begins every standard loop. It serves as an interactive tutorial area where you learn the basics of flight, zero-gravity movement, signal tracking, and scouting before launching into space. Exploring the planet fully leads to ancient Nomai ruins, hidden quantum grove phenomena, and the underground mining site.

Shops and people

  • Mica: Offers a tutorial using a miniature remote-controlled model ship to practice flight mechanics
  • Tektite: Offers a zero-gravity cave training course to practice thruster and jetpack control
  • Marl: Offers practice using the Little Scout camera tool

Tips

  • Always shoot your Little Scout into unknown caves or ruins to photograph for the glowing green presence of deadly Ghost Matter before stepping forward.
  • You can roast marshmallows at the village campfire or other campfires across the planet to restore your health, but avoid letting them catch fire and burn unless you want an achievement.
  • Look inside the village crater's geysers when they are not erupting to find a network of water-filled caverns beneath the crust.
