Coen coordinates with the nobleman Iulian Codrin to concoct a supernatural poison aimed at tipping the odds in his favor during the impending duel against the boyar Ambrus. Pushing through the Briar Sloughs wetlands to find the poison maker Vera, Coen discovers her fate, retrieves her notes, and gathers rare materials to perform an occult ritual.
